Hi,
I'm hoping someone may be able to identify the transaxle I have? I was in my late Fathers garage for many years. I think it could be a Renault 369 box and not a UN1? It appears to be new or perhaps rebuilt? Also I see it has an inspection seal or tag through a hole betwween the casing to prevent it from being tampered with... could it be from a racing version?? Any ideas would be good.

Cheers

Looks like an NG box, used in loads of Renault 18, Fuego, 21 etc. Oh, and Formula Renault cars

I remember vaguely a conversation about the box and racing- I could only think of the Renault 5 Turbo… not remembering formula Renault. Any idea if there’s anyone around who knows anything about these boxes? I know the box was purchased years ago with the intention of going into a Ford GT40 replica... that never happened.

Most GT40`s would have used the UN1 from the 21Turbo, R25, R30, Master van.... The NG wouldnt take the torque.
The NG was a whole lot lighter and quite a good box really. Rebuilt loads due to synchro issues but not many other problems. I built several for F Renaults in the early days. What do you need to know?

NG3 for sure, suffix is determined by ratios

Hi,

Is it worth me finding out the ratio(s)? Is it the diff ratio or each gear?

Given a full set of ratios I should be able to tell you the full number, providing that none have been altered to suit. From memory it was only 5th that could be swapped as the mainshaft was machined complete with fixed gears and diff pinion.

Is there an easy way to find this data or do I need to split the box ?

asked around at Alpine and as above really could be off any Alpine/Renult of the era. Offers are up to £60 though!

Only way really is to split the box. Not a difficult job, remove the detent balls and springs from the rear cover, the big linkage bracket on the rear and the rear cover. Bellhousing is already off so just a line of bolts top and bottom plus a couple in the middle. If I remember correctly you lift the cover with the filler plug in, that way you leave the gear sets in place without having to realign the selector forks on reassembly.
