My clio 182 wont start. It turned on the first time, but really lumpy idle and massively down on power struggling to move the car at all without cutting out. This happened before and was told the cylinders had unburnt fuel in them. So I took the fuse for the fuel pump out and it sparked. Was up north last week and filled up with tesco 95 RON, no super. And on Wednesday the same thing happened but ran ok and I then filled up with V power. Yesterday I drove the car in and out the drive it started fine but I try not to do extremely short 'journeys' like that if I can.

Any help would be greatly apprieciated thanks.

Can no one help a brother out? I heard it could be the MAP sensor but I wasn't sure as it was doing it at the beginning and fine after.

Probably best to ask on cliosport to be honest. There'll be more people there au fait with the causes of such a fault on that car.

When you say it won't start, do you mean its not starting normally? Reading your thread it seems that it is starting just running badly. Could be a number of things and I'm not familiar with Clio's but Cliosport would be a good place to start.

Sorry I wasn't very clear. It starts sometimes. Others will start and idles really rough and sometimes cuts off. If I leave it for a few hours and overnight it can start fine.

It might be purely coincidental but its usually damp when it won't start. Only happening recently, 3 or 4 times.

Sounds like coil packs or the MAF.

My 172 absolutely HATES Tesco 95, it has a tough time starting on it and will sometimes take 3 goes. Once it does start the idle is fast and lumpy. I know what you mean when you say it feels like it's going to cut out. There is something about the F4R engine and that fuel that doesn't work well. It sounds like it was okay on V power then? Just avoid the Tesco 95 like the plague, Sainsbury's 95 is very good and usually cheaper.

It may also be the TDC sensor giving up the ghost. This senses where the top dead centre of the engine is and the reading is used when starting the engine. If it's on the way out or dirty it can make the car do what you say yours is doing. I removed mine last year when I had similar problems to you that I pinned down to a combination of crap Tesco fuel and this sensor. It was very corroded so I cleaned it up and all was well. Quite tough to get to and remove though.

I'd definately look at the coil packs, mrs has had trouble with them on her Clio more than once and with very similar symptoms to your car.

This or the crank sensor. Does vmuch sound like coilpacks. My mates 182 would feel like it was running out of petrol when the sensors were going on his. Fine then chug chug chug very random.

Just curious, but why would an engine struggle to start on 95 rather than super?

Got it on a diagnostic machine. It came up with slight misfire in cylinder 4. And retried it later and it came up with no faults. So possibly coil pack but running perfectly just now.

Id look at coolant temp sensor, common fault, and controls fuelling,so would cause overfuelling when cold, only around £12 last time I got one too.

I had something similar on ours... Turned out to be a dodgy injector. Does the emissions light come on due to the misfire?

There are lots of common faults. Coil packs, degraded ht leads arcing to the plenum, crank sensor... Even oil in plug well from spill at top-up.

It may be as well to get an independent Renault specialist to diagnose and replace the right bit. Renault'll pull your pants down for diagnosis and labour.

I had a bit of a cough on mine yesterday. It was very, very wet outside, and a pretty cold morning. The first time, it didn't start, but started fine the second time. The car is also running very rough from cold.

Coil packs do we reckon?
Some sensor somewhere?
