Hi. As above really, my dads Peugeot 405 1.9TD GTX is proving tricky to start sometimes, and I wondered if anyone had any suggestions on where to start looking for the problem. Last time it was the fuel lines that link up the injectors that were letting in air. They were replaced and I've had a look in that area and can't see any fuel leaking out.

I think my dad may scrap it this time if there is no easy fix frown Would be a shame as once started it runs just fine.

Oh also the coolant guage is playing up, it will shoot up to hot/overheating for a few seconds then quickly go back down to normal again, could this be related?

Could be glowplugs, or glowplug relay yes

if a derv pipe rubs though or goes 'pappy' it can suck air and not leak. which can be very decieving.

have you tried the filter head?

as once started it runs just fine. This is why I think you only have a glowplug problem. On start up, do you get any exhaust smoke ? Blue smoke is generally a sign of unburnt fuel particularly in a cold engine. Does it start ok when the engine is warmed up ?

Really sounds like glow plugs to me too. On my old 309 turbo diesel the glow plugs hardly worked, I had so much fun every time I went to start the car in the winter. Using loads of Easy start spray as well just to get it turning over. Once it fires up though I would cover the entire close in white blue smoke and then just drive off as if nothing has happened

I have a similar issue with my 306.

It starts a bit rough, almost as if starting on 3 cylinders. If left, it will sort itself out within a couple of seconds and emit some bluish smoke out the back. Alternatively, if I prod the accelerator a tad it'll clear immediately.

It is worse when it is cold.

Leaving the ignition on up to 10 seconds sometimes helps, sometimes does not.

I replaced all the glow plugs with decent Bosch brand.

I still have the same issue.

Is it likely to be the relay next?

No,when they get on a bit the xud setup suffers from fuel running back to the tank.An easy fix is an inline, one way valve between the fuel pump and the fuel filter, cost about £6 from a diesel injection specialists.10 minutes to fit.

I've not heard of that before - I'll give it a go, cheers. The car has 160k so is certainly getting on a bit.

I hope you're right. I posted this same problem on pug306.net and the consensus was it was the fuel filter.
