Peugeot 407HDi particle filter
Discussion
The warning light has flashed up on my Dad's 120k mile 2006 407 stating thst the particle filter needs replacing.
I've heard pub talk that these can just be removed in the UK and the car will still run fine and be legal - is that correct or is it important that it is replaced (at a fairly large cost)?

They can be had a lot cheaper than they used to be & can even be reconditioned (if you but from the dealer they are often old reconditioned units) but also has it had a foced regenaration tried???
Quite often this can extend the life of the filter as it effectivly super heats the filter burning off the soot.
Also worth checking the additive is topped up as if this is low it will cause the filter to soot up much quicker than it should.
I dont think removing the system would be cost effective though as the extra work to avoid engine lights & fabricating a replacement exhaust would probably add up to more than just fixing it would cost.

Hmmn, well having passengered in it several times, I think it gets a decent 'clear out' on a very regular basis on the fairly deserted Portuguese motorways and A roads that it lives on.....
What happens if it isn't replaced then (apart from annoying 'reminders' from the dashboard) - will it damage anything?
