It was pointed out at the BMW HQ Sunday Service that the lacquer is peeling badly on the near-side of the front bumper. Starting on the registration plate plinth it spreads along the lower parts under the grille and foglights and up the side with another patch under the headlamp unit. It's patchy like sunburn.

I spoke to the Service Manager on the phone who suggested that it was probably due to stone-chipping and that it would not be covered under my warranty.

Thing is, it was not as it is now before Bracknell, and it was pointed out by a fellow PHer, that for a 2yr old car with 19k on the clock and such a bluff front-end it's remarkably free of stone-chips. I didn't follow a single car on the 30mi journey from home.

Peugeot man said that "Once the laquer has been chipped by a stone, the lacquer will peel very easily."

I've a huge chip on the leading edge of the bonnet, down to the metal, there's no peeling around that, and a friend has an old 206 with bare metalwork showing under the rear windscreen, his lacquer is also fine. On the drive we also have an 05-plate Audi A6 which has covered 86,000mi, a fair few chips yet the lacquer is fine...

I took it in, but the Manager wasn't there and is the only one capable to deal with such things, but a young chap came out to have a quick look and saidnthat it didn't look right, no mention of stone chipping.

Fast forward a week and I'm driving from central London to a pre-arranged meeting with the Service Manager, en-route I recieve a voicemail from one of the Advisors saying "...your bumper isn't covered under warranty...". How had this decision been made without even being seen? Unfortunately, this wasn't heard until after, but the Manager had a look and in less than 5mins it had been arranged to be picked up on Tuesday for a front-end re-spray under warranty... rolleyes

This is how it looks at the moment. Ticked over to 20,000mi the other day too.

Deffo looks like it has be sprayed out of the factory , as even after stone chips it won't flake like that .

I know in the early 2000,s Citroen had a laquer peel issue with some of their paint finishes. That does look strange though it is very localised but has so many areas of peel it must have had some sort of repair, still not a very nice look and not what you would expect on a newish car.I think a big fuss at the dealer is called for as i dont think that would be acceptable to me.May be worth asking a friendly bodyshop for their opinion as to what has caused it.

Great, thanks guys. We reckon it must have been subject to a repaired parking ding on that corner.

Took it to the dealer as requested only to be told that the Service Manager is the only person able to deal with this sort of thing, and guess what, he works the same hours as I do! Thankfully I finish early on Friday, I just hope that he doesn't, but it means another week with a sunburned car... irked

Arranged to meet the Service Manager, got a voicemail on the way from one of the Advisors telling me it was not covered, (didn't listen until after), Manager said very quickly that it wasn't right and it'd be in ASAP for a front-end respray, this happens tomorrow. Opinions of the Serive Dept are rapidly sliding downhill...

Definitely looks like there's been a poorly carried out SMART repair done at some point.
