Hello,

Wanted to check if this is normal.

Missus has a 308 1.6 "110 Sport" Diesel. It's an 08 reg with the 5 speed box.

Going at motorways speeds (80-85ish) it'll average about 42 mpg according to the trip computer.
Going at 60mph down the motorway might bring this up to around 50mpg or so.

Doing back rounds to work, being very gentle with the accelerator and trying not to brake we can get around 49mpg.

This seems utter ste to me. I used to have a lame 1.4 petrol almera (S reg) and I drove a lot quicker in that despite it having less power and I still get more mpg on a run.

Cheers, Andy.

Hi Andy
I know this is the only reply, but not too long ago i had a Citron C3 Picasso (Hire Car) which had the same engine, and i had the same probelm, I noticed tho when i dropped the speed down to 65-70 mph the MPG went up a little but not much. Sorry i cant offer a solution but your not the only one with this probelm. Hope this helps.

There's a few websites where owners give the real MPG figures for their cars. The data is then averaged to give you a "real" MPG figure instead of the optimistic manufacturer claims.

A quick search on Google for "real MPG figures" should get you some results.

If it is lower then usual then try getting it fully serviced if it hasn't been done for a while and it's been used for short trips. Also a blast down the motorway in 4th gear might do it some good too. From memory it'll do the DPF some good too as I think the Regen starts when the car has been doing more than 3,000rpm for 5 minutes.

Mind you , i had a 405 TD and around town it did 23mpg and 34mpg on motorway - so think yourself lucky! even Autcar only manged 31 mpg in their road test (not the bullst ebay 50mpg all day long)

Doesn't seem that bad.
2 tips:

1 - it won't achieve the manufacturer's figures.
2 - don't compare your figures to what your mate/colleague/other PH member/whatever claims to be getting, because it is likely to be a) not comparable or b) bullst.

My little 207 110 does slightly better but like anything it depends on all sorts of factors. How fast you drive upto 70. How fast you slow down. How good your tyres are and what is their pressure. Dry road, wet road, rough road. Hills, flat roads and so on. Oh and don't forget....what type and quality of fuel you put in.

In 20 years of driving -the only significant difference i have noticed is from city driving to motorway journeys -other factors have had virtually zero effect.
I 've used the cheapy fuels and the posh ones - no difference
Just my experiences though.

I notice it a lot on my journey to work. We are not talking 10mpg difference as an average but 3mpg. I do long journeys to and from work which would obviously show more than silly short journeys.

My old Focus used to hate Morrison's fuel. Every other fuel I used would get me around 350 miles out of a full tank. With Morrison's finest in the tank it would struggle to get 300 miles from a full tank. It wasn't just the one off either, I used it a few times and always with the same result.
