306 2.0 hdi engine cut out

Where can I get advice on common hdi problems? Friend has a hdi that kept conking out last night. 115,000 miles on it. Won't rev over 2,500 and ecu light is on. As soon as he accelerates or tries to gas it, it just looses power. Any help would be appreciated, not familiar with the diesel

Could be as simple as a blocked fuel filter.

Otherwise a diagnostic plug-in would be a good start.
