Hi, recently my Peugeot 205 diesel has lost some (of its very little) power. Used to be able to go past 90 mph (with a broken exhaust) but now won't go past 80. I've replaced the exhaust and it was a lot better but now seems to have gone slow. I've checked the air filter and it's clean so I think it's breathing properly. The only thing I've changed is that I've swapped the 13" steels for 15" alloys from a 1.9 GTI but the tyres are lower profile so the diameter is hardly any bigger so I don't think it's really geared the car up. Does anyone know what other things could effect the performance? The tyres are wider though, could that be a problem?

The car is a normally aspirated diesel and has done 70 000 miles.

Thanks.

Fuel filter? Fuel pump?

Is it smoking more than usual?

Slack throttle linkages? (seriously!)

I'll have a look at the fuel filter and pump.

I haven't noticed any more smoke. In fact it's pretty much smoke free.

By slack throttle linkages so you mean that I might not be getting full throttle? The fuel economy doesn't seem as good though recently so I don't think it might be that since I'd only get better MPG if I'm not flooring it.

It could be something more serious like rings or gasket but I'd certainly check the fuel filter first...

Those old Peugeot Diesels are bullet proof and go for ever (but slowly).Check all the normal servicing items, put some good quality injector cleaner in the tank, make sure your getting full throttle!that last little bit on the pump lever makes all the difference and give it a good thrashing.I use a 94 306 1.9 non turbo (165000mls) and it can get over 90mph!!

Old Merc, by all means the 205 should be as fast as if not faster than the 306 since it's a lighter car. I think I'm going to have to start by giving it a good clean. Put some fuel cleaner in, drive like a mad italian in 3rd gear down the motorway and check that the fuel filter is clean.

I checked the throttle though and I am getting full throttle. Hopefully it'll sort the problem out.

I think the wheels may have something to do with it, there are tire size calculators on the net that might help.
