Sadly this isn't for me frown.

Anyway my mum needs a new car, I've spotted a clean looking, low mileage Clio 197 in one of these car supermarkets. When I say spotted I mean saw it in person. Now I'm trying to come up with reasons why she should get it (considering it is as fast as my dad's BMW). I think from looking I would be correct in saying fuel economy is a subject to try and avoid. I would really appreciate it if anyone who has got or had a Clio 197 would be able to come up with some good points about the car. My tactic when I got my dad to buy the BMW won't work this time biggrin

Thank you in advance.

FF or Cup or FF with Cup suspension? What other extras? Does she fancy Thierry Henry? 5* NCAP...what floats her boat? What sort of daily drive?

Just the run of the mill 197. The daily driving includes a shopping run. Going into town and such and going to see the horse. She currently has a Kia Picanto but that is a bit boring. (and broken)

Does your mum really want a hot hatch?

erm, well, ahhhh.

She wants something decent. The Clio is a good price and is much much better than what she has got now.

"Run of the mill" Ouch!
Just tell her it's a nice Clio, practical (she can get 3 of her lunch buddies in no problem), safe (5*NCAP), insurance group isn't bad for a hot-hatch and hopefully favourite colour (I mean that's how women choose cars right?), she'll drive it normally and not really notice there is another 5,000rpm spare until you warm it up off the driveway wink

The mrs uses ours daily with schools runs (ooer) and a commute with no worries, enough poke and brakes to keep her out of trouble and still makes me smile when I wrestle the key(less entry card) out of her mitts.

I've been trying to work on the angle "It has a big boot" and the 5* NCAP rating is useful. It would be great fun though shes there trundling along at 300rpm in 4th, and then I say the magic words "drop a cog and boot it". We've already got one decent car so I'm trying to make it two decent cars biggrin.

No point really if anything like my mum a hot hatch would be pointless for them and a unnecessary expense. If still want something fairly nippy better off with the 1.6 GT model more than quick enough and cheaper to buy and run or maybe a mk7 zetec s fiesta a warm hatch would be more than sufficient smile

Wouldn't bother. Iv got.a 182 as my only car. If I used it purely as a means of getting from A to B, I'd fking hate it! A standard clio would be much better if your mum won't use it for blasting down a twisty B road. I know the 197 is slightly more refined than the 182 but still couldn't justify the extra running cost.
