Clio Cat/Exhaust Problems..

I have a Mk1 Clio Provence and all but the downpipe + cat is missing of my exhaust. I recently bought a centre pipe to go onto the end of the cat but was surprised when it arrived with a flange and my cat doesn't have one. I then checked the end of my cat to see if when the old exhaust was lost it took part of the cat with it but it looks very clean no sign of anything snapped off.. it has a small rim with a width of about 10mm which is about 2" from the end of the cat. It looks like the center pipe could slip over the end of the cat til it hits this rim but I don't know if this would be secure enough :/. Would be greatful if anyone could tell me if I'm missing something out or being silly lol.

Looking at the exhaust catalogue,it looks like there are different systems before and after may 98ish.Upto may98 the cat has a flange after may 98 it has a sealing ring and twin bolt clamp.
