I’ve been offered a cheap early 172 phase 1 clio to use as a track car. It’s cheap for three reasons, little bit of rust in the arches (should be easy to rub down), needs a cam belt and the gearbox is knackered.

Question, can these boxes be repaired? It crunches shifting into 3rd and occasionally 4th so I’m assuming synco issues or am I best off picking up a used box (going rate appears to be £200-£350 plus postage).

Any suggestions on good sources for used boxes or repairs?

Also which gearbox do I need as there appears to be three types depending on whether it’s a cup, or early or later.

Thanks

You only need a gearbox with a hole for the speedo cable to plug into, iirc the 172 cup has a speedo cable so they can be used as can a mk1 williams box JC5014.

It's just the later phase 2 clios have the speedo working from a sensor so they don't have a slot in the box for the cable to go in.

Go on www.clio16valver.co.uk or www.cliosport.net, I know on the 1st site a couple of guys are breaking phase 1 172's so will probably have just what you need wink

Gearbox is £300 or so to buy 2nd hand/get rebuild at Agency Transmissions
Cambelt is the biggy, a good £450 to get done properly.

And they shouldnt rust. That would suggest crash damage.

Basically, unless its less than £500, i wouldnt bother.
