Sub £2K Clio 172s
Discussion
Looking at a Clio 172 as a competition car and was wondering what the sub £2K cars are like either on autotrader or the classifieds here. I already have a 52 plate clio shopping car (1.2!) so know what to expect on some fronts but just wondered if anyone here has recently bought or sold one and what problems could be expected?
Only looking at ~5000 miles per annum so faults arising from long distance driving arent really an issue but i would imagine at least 75% of those 5000 miles will be at maximum attack! assuming that anything <£2K will be 85000+ miles, the cambelt change is a given, anything else? most i have seen look clean and standard, what have real life users experienced in terms of failures or general wear and tear.
car is intended to be stripped, weld-in caged, coilovers and some other minor competition bits to begin with, absolutely has to remain road legal and will be driven to CSCC tin tops/another saloon championship races. yes it will be uncompetitive, but no, with a bit of luck we wont be last on the grid!...
Clio 172 stories, hit me....

Wife's had two 2004 182's. Only issues we've had are rear wheel bearing which is a simple job as their part of the discs. Recently the heater has started playing up (see my other thread) other than that they have been fine. Cambelt and aux belts can be expensive (£300 in parts) and will require the renault timing tools to setup right.
If you're not already on there, go on cliosport & look in the projects section.
3 of my best mates are currently building 1*2's for the tin tops, & another already races in it ...
My opinion, you're better off buying one thats been caged already!!
Re: £2k 1*2's. Usual stuff really, cambelt/aux belt/de-phaser. Generally fairly cheap to run/fix and great fun.

A said, Cliosport is the best starting point for research. There's some seriously nice track/race stuff threads on there.

If you need a decent mechanic with experience of playing with fast Clios, let me know. The guy who looks after my Williams is a bit of a legend with a spanner, I wouldn't take my car anywhere else. He's got a 172 that he runs as a daily aswell, so knows all about that model aswell as the earlier stuff.
Be good to see what you get and see it out racing

You'll need to be a member for that link but I can assure you it's worth paying for that guide alone.Buying guide here - http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?2768...

What you wanting for the half cage mate? Email me on here or CS.net if you'd like
thanks for the advice, will look into cliosport registration etc at the weekend.
most of the track prep'd road legal cars i have seen have a 6 point bolt in cage and i really want to have the weld in multipoint cage, not only for safety but also to stiffen the car up a bit more. i appreciate it weighs more and keeping it road legal is already a compromise but i think its worth it.
