Cleaning Scalextric track - decorators sponge?

Bought a load of old Scalextric track which needs the metal runners cleaning of the tarnish that has built up. I was recommended using decorators sponges - has anyone else done this and had decent results? If no good, what's a better way of doing it?

I used emery cloth on some old bits I pulled out the loft.

Worked a treat, looked brand new.

Try an ink rubber first, then start on the abrasives. Contact cleaner from Maplin will keep it clean.

Would that be something like IPA? That's what I was going to recommend anyway, use it for cleaning all sorts of electrical equipment.

Is the tarnish so bad that the cars won't run? If not, the best abrasive is the contact braids under the cars - build a track and race on it for ages and the rails will polish up.

Nope not IPA that'll clean it but contact cleaner will keep it that way.
