I am looking to make from scratch a display case from 4mm thick clear acrylic sheet.

The supplier has kindly offered to cut the sheet to size for me (by band saw so I will need to wet n dry edges) but I wondered if anyone knew what adhesive I should use to create an 'invisible' (or as close as I can get) join?

I think you're always going to see an edge unless you use a single piece of acrylic and then heat and mould it using male and female wooden moulds.

A solvent joint is going to look like this;

The alternative is to use a lead tape over the edges as per this;

Suggest you try "Glue n'Glaze" by Deluxe Materials. It's probably the best adhesive for attaching model aircraft canopies etc etc, dries clear and bonds "most" plastics. It's a PVA type material so excess can be removed with a damp cloth. Your local model shop should stock it or look at link below. It's made in Hampshire, (despite the slightly cheesy name).

Gator Glue is something similar. It's American but can be bought at Modelzome outlets.
