HPI Savage Nitro Truck
Discussion
This weekend I decided to get the nitro truck out of the loft and take it for a bash, its not been touched in about a year, just sat in the loft gathering dust. So I got it down and realised that I had no fuel.
My local shop had closed so found out the closest shop was about 30 miles away, anyway had no choice so drove there and got some fuel.
Came home all excited thinking I would be able to get it going, but no such luck, glow plug charger was dead, so charged that up. Meanwhile decided to replace the glow plug too, luckily I had a few spares. Finally the glow plug charger has some charge, excellent I think I can now get it going and take it out. But no it didn’t want to start, after about an hour of messing around trying to get it going I just gave up.
I have decided to sell it and replace it with an electric buggy instead. I am hoping that will be less hassle.
So a few questions, first of all how much is my truck likely to be worth if I sell it as it is, it needs a bit of TLC and all the carb pins etc need to be reset to get it going again, it needs someone who has a bit more patience then me. Its an HPI Savage 21 with an upgraded 25 engine. I have the original .21 engine which is in bits and can be used as spares, also have a rotostart and starter, but it’s fitted with the pull start at the moment. Have a load of extras such as spare bad boy exhaust, glow plugs, various spur gears, clutch, tyres, body, etc
Secondly what do I replace it with; it must be 4WD and be able to run on grass, want to go the electric route for less hassle but also want something as strong and sturdy as my truck. Oh and it needs to be at least as fast, preferably faster then my current HPI Savage
The budget will be whatever I get for the truck….

Hmm I find that odd with the savage, those Nitro Star engines are usually very good, I did a similar thing with mine and it fired up first time (no plug replacement either) and has never faltered since. to be honest a used savage even with the .25 engine in it wouldn't be worth that much £100 on ebay maybe, especially as you can pick up new ones fairly cheaply.
Look here if you fancy converting the savage to electric power Link scroll down to the conversion parts section and you can get the conversion kit for $540 or ~£370 dunno if you can get them in the UK or if they are any good but it might work out cheaper than buying a new truck all together. Other than that I can't offer any advice on Electric cars as I have never run one.

To be honest i have been having a look at the truck this evening and have just realised that the fuel line is blocked, which would explain why it was not firing up. No fuel getting to the engine.
Its an easy enough fix, but it means i have to order some new fuel pipe, and probably replace the fuel filter too.
Its just annoying when you want to go for a bash i want to be able to just fire it up immediately rather then having to mess around for so long, hence i think electric is the best way forward. All i have to worry about then is charging the battery...
Not to keen on forking out £300+ for an electric conversion, im sure i could get a pretty good electric car for that??

I would just get your truck going again.
Batterys have there own problems as you have to wait for them to charge up and you only get a few minutes of driving before you need to charge again.
Lots of batterys will be expensive.
If you use your truck more often then you wont have as many problems starting it

Electric is all well and good but I'm sure you would soon get bored with the lack of noise constant changing and charging of batteries and lack of power unless you go brushless and lipo and then you will find it more of a hassle charging & ballacing batteries setting up ESCs or just blowing them plus the cost in the first place.
Nitro engines are a very simple motor all you need is compression, air, fuel, and a pre ignition glow to get it going. reset the needles to factory settings and retune form there once you have it running.
If your fuel lines are blocked just clean them out no need to replace them.

I doubt you will get a full electric RC truck in the same ilk as the savage for £300 certainly not one with the same get up and go, and ruggedness.
I have just had a look in the book and the factory settings for the Nitro Star 25 are; High speed Needle 4 1/2 turns open, Low speed needle 3 turns open. Throttle gap ~2mm. You'll probably find those settings a tad rich if the engine is already bedded in.
Stick with nitro - once they are setup they are sweet little engines.

Weather was lovely today, so after having watched the F1 GP and having given both cars a rinse i decided to give the Savage another go. I reset the high speed and low speed needles as described above, filled the fuel tank, put on the glow plug charger and gave the pull start a pull. It fired up immediately and my ears were full of that distinctive nitro engine squeal.
Gave it a quick run around the garden then switched it back off again and put it in the back of the car. Drove down to a local gravel car park and decided to take it for a spin there. It was great to have it running again but it needs some tuning to get it running properly again, for example no matter how hard i tried the front wheels were not lifting of the ground, where as a few years ago a blip of the throttle and they would lift up. Anyway used it for about 20 mins then disaster. One of the rear tyres flew off.
I started to look around for the bolt and the hex wheel hub, luckily i managed to find both, however i then realised that a pin that goes through the axle and into the hex wheel hub was missing. No chance i was giong to find that.
So i now need to try and find out what those little pin things are called and then try and order some from somewhere.
I realised one thing though, its great to have got it running again!

Good to hear it is back up and running. I can offer my services again. The little pin that holds the hex hub on is HPI part number: Z260 (a 2.5x12mm stainless steel pin). I think they come in packs of four (yes I have had to replace several of these ). Your local model shop should be able to source them - if not or if you don't have a local model shop then go here Model Sport.Gave it a quick run around the garden then switched it back off again and put it in the back of the car.
