Yokomo YZ-10 needs TLC
Discussion
Hello!
Hopefully the PH collective can offer me some advice.
I have an old Yokomo YZ-10 super dogfighter and am looking to have it reconditioned as a bit of a project, something to wind away the quiet evenings away from her indoors!
I bought it many years ago off a mate and then didnt use it much at all. I managed to break the top chassis (don't ask me how!!) and then it sat on top of a cupboard until recently. I managed to get hold of a replacement from fibre-lyte which is ace!
I have several motors sitting at home, these are the brushed type. They are of various turns and spin ratings, some quite expensive i think, Yokomo's etc.. They haven’t been used for about 10+ years. Would it be worth trying to get these up and running again? Is it likely that after all this time of the motors sitting around, that they would have lost any of their performance i.e. the magnets would not be working as well as they should?
Anyone have any idea how much would it cost and what would I need to get these motors in good condition? I assume I would need new brushes and clips (dog clips) to connect the motors to the ESC (which I still need to buy). How do you ‘break in’ new brushes? What would i need to do to the motors to get them back up to speed?
On top of this, what oils and greases would I need for the rest of the car, for the shocks, gearings, bearings etc..? I am pretty sure I would need some new batteries, the old ones I am are pretty knackered by now!?
Do you have any other advice for me for re-conditioning an old car? I doubt its going to be worth any more then I will spend on it but its something i really want to do!
I'll post some pics up if there is any interest : ) thanks for any help!

With the car I would strip it down and rebuild it, diffs, shocks everything.
I would also buy (if you can) new shock seals or anything that has had fluid next to it that could make it expand over time.
As for electronics, they should still work although very out of date!! The cells I wouldnt touch, you will need new ones. The motor may actually still work, although the brushes may have gone a bit hard so I would maybe invest in some new ones.
If you need any info RC car related then try www.oople.com This is where I regularly take part in forum discussions. Everyone on there is very knowledgable and there is a for sale and wanted section that maybe useful

would jsut like to second that, also the motors may need a "skim" your local model shop will do this for about £7 including new brushes.I would also buy (if you can) new shock seals or anything that has had fluid next to it that could make it expand over time.

If you are local to me i would skim it for you, no charge, but you need to buy your own brushes

Pictures as promised! (LOTS OF : ) )
Motors!
Car!
Box!
Still needs a lot of work!
The motors all needs reconditioning. Think it will be worth it? There are some quite good ones there, any idea how much they could be worth?
Also want to buy some shock mounts as the old ones look a bit worn around the edges, think its spent too much time upside down!! no electrics on the car yet either, all need to be bought too. I am still to decide wether i will get a brushless motor setup, is the car going to be worth it?
will take pictures of the body too, its off to kamtec who are hopefully going to make me a replica so i can have a fresh new one to show it off!
: )
so much work to do... so little time...!

Be carefull taking the motor to a shop to be skimmed.
I have seen some shocking skims done at shops.
You might be better off going to your local club and see if anybody there has a lathe (and knows how to use it)
I dont think the motors will be worth anything. I have a box in the roof with about 15 similar motors that are no use now.

The chassis itself is definitely worth something even now, but it's never likely to reach the astronomical heights of some of the early or rare Tamiyas for example. It's like all these things, condition is absolutely everything and the value is then decided by what any one person is prepared to pay for it on any one day. A bloke at a car boot might offer you 50p, I as a Tamiya collector might offer you £50 but a Yokomo nut who's been looking for just that car for months might offer you £150 or more, I have no idea.
Regards the motors, I honestly wouldn't bother UNLESS you have gont ones where the can and endbell are mint (importantly including any labels) in which case they will be worth something for display purposes. As runners, things have moved on in that you can now get the same performance for less money.
I'd love something like that in my collection, but it's a bit beyond the scope of models that I am focusing on. IF you can find the odd replacement parts to really mint it up, then it could bring some challenge and amusement of an evening and at the end you have a lovely CF chassis'd vintage buggy to go on display.

kinda figured on the motors so gonna get the car up to scratch and take it from there. been keeping an eye on ebay for quite a while now and so far done well. Managed to get an original set of stickers/decals : ) just waiting for delivery from Aus!! Front and rear shock mounts, I have managed to get hold of, not originals but from fibre lyte...
so now i am waiting to find time to give the whole car a rebuild, will see what i do with it after that : )
