My folks have recently, following a clear out of their loft, dumped all my old 00 train stuff from my childhood in my garage. Geeky nerd as it may be, I still like a bit of train action (fnarr) and I've got some nice models in those old boxes so I think I'm going to build me a bit of a layout down one side of the garage and play with trains a bit.

It'll be a bit of a fun project, and frankly, if it turns out that playing with trains is not nearly as enjoyable as it was when I was a boy, I won't have lost much as I think I've got pretty much everything I need - trains, track, buildings etc. Rock on!

C'mon then, own up, who has a train set? (Or a 'model railway' as I believe the true enthusiast would prefer to call it?)

I don't ... but on the subject of geeky things you did when you were younger ... I used to make model aircraft those 'airfix kits'and then hang them off my ceiling. They were always wrong, with far too much glue coming out of all the joins, wonky wings, parts that were too difficult to fit simply left out, increadibly badly painted and with creased decals.

I have however just started building a model lancaster bomber and while my skills have only moderately imrproved I must say that it is extreamly relaxing!

hopefully you'll find the same with your trainset. Don't forget to take some good snaps and share with the rest of PH!

Funny you should bring up kits - a couple of years back I had a job away from home during the week, and to give me something to do in the evenings and to stop me going to the bar every night, I started making kits again. I did much, much better (IMO) at it too than I did in my boyhood, largely because age had given me the patience to not launch in without reading the instructions and want to do it all in a day!! I built three WW2 tanks - Panther, Sherman and Cromwell, and two WW2 planes - Bristol Beaufighter nightfighter and Hawker Typhoon. Nice....

Photos - roger!

Built a tamiya RC scooby over christmas, as you say very relaxing...

I always got to the point in airfix models when you needed thre hands and a dislocated finger or two .. but yes I too had a ceiling covered in them all now no doubt in some landfill somwhere..

Me too. I considered most important that the propellors were sufficiently well fitted that they would spin if I blew on them.

Painting wasn't much good though.

Other half has a part model railway. He had his loft worked on so he could put it up there, got loads of board etc, even has a bowl full of sawdust to paint for grass/ballast/whatever. Has some nice trains and loads of track, and as he didn't like the Hornby buildings, I spent ages constructing houses and pubs and stations and things with the Metcalfe kits.

But... track is getting nowhere near laid, and trains are still in boxes, and he has a town's worth of carboard buildings all over the place.

He also does Airfix kits, he ran out of room at his house, so I have a fleet of Airbuses hanging from my ceiling, along with a couple of Concordes, Emirates A380 and an Antonov. We also have a few ships (Queen Elizabeth 2 and Queen Mary 2), and pride of place is the oilrig that I built. (with a Mig-29 parked next to it smile )

Dear 51mes,

landfill, schmandfill...
...when I, erm, moved on from modelmaking as a boyish pleasure a mate and I created real model (oxymoron alert) dogfights/disasters. It was around November the 5th, do you follow? evil

ISTR MIGs and Lightnings were particularly receptive to a banger inserted, lit then thrown. Max points for timing such that the resulting explosion was in midair biglaugh

Such amusement is denied kids these days,

regards,
Jet

I found a box full of my old Hornby stuff the other day. Carriages, and a steam engine, might have been the Flying Scotsman. Lovely stuff.

We had a huge house when I was young and had it set up on a massive table in a room, then we moved when I was about 8 and it's never really been used since. I had it in the attic for a while at the newer house but it was always getting boxes of books dropped on it.

I've always fancied setting it up again, but never really had the space. One day I will.

I have several hundred feet of G gauge (45mm track width rather than 16ish for 00) stuff outside, its good fun in summer and its nice and big so doesn't derail much. Have you discovered DCC yet, its a much better control system? Allowing you lots of trains on the same bit of track without clever point work.

eek God's Holy Trousers! How can anyone have enough spare time for that level of detail!?

I may, if I'm feeling really dedicated to my project, place a couple of people* and a diecast bus on my layout......

ETA - not real people, just little plastic ones

Thanks Jet,

If only that opportunity had been open to me - We moved house when I was 13 and well nothing much survived the move - If I had known it woudl be that bad I'm sure I would have had more fun tiying them to fieworks first ;-) then end result would have been the same but what a way to go ;-)

Back on topic - Must get the scalextric out of th loft and into the now empty spare room!

My dad has a massive layout in his loft. I always find it therapeutic to have a go whenever i am up there. It's great fun.

Good luck with the build.

Dear andy400,

oh, and more on topic.

I too have boxes of rolling stock. They're a bit special, family heirloom stuff. My father and especially for the scratchbuilt stuff my grandfather played trains to their death. All OO gauge. I particularly liked Underground trains that need 3rd/4th rails for power just like the real thing. You can imagine the complexity of the track, none of your shop bought 2-rail.

As a boy I had my own layout in my bedroom which was proprietary Triang. My father's layout was in the front room. That was only after my mum insisted he built an extension which became the "front" room, even though it was at the back of the house smile
Not too many houses with two train sets!

My plan is to rediscover model railways when I retire and get the stuff going. Too much else to do till then; currently fighting a car stereo, the score's about 1-1 clickysmile

Jet

Nice. thumbup Ours barely had one. Twas just a 6'x4' baseboard with a couple of loops and some sidings that couldn't have any permanent fixtures as it lived on the spare room double bed and had to be slid behind a wardrobe when we had guests, but by God it was an awesome railway network to me!!!!

yes My ideal future house will have room for both trains and Scelextrix, but for now my available space is about 16'x1' and it's much easier to have an 'end-to-end' railway layout than a Scalextrix track - could be quite dull!!

Dear andy400,

steam engine with tender and room for a turntable?
Go on you know you want to.

Terminus at one end and fiddle yard at the other?
If that's the right expression.

Yes it is, clicky
quote:
There are many options to fiddle yards
  • Static marshalling yards with fanned-out sidings
  • Horizontal traverser tables
  • Vertical traversing shelves/display cabinets.
regards,
Jet

ETA fiddle yard stuff, /Homer mmm horizontal traverser tables Homer/
