guiness world record fastes nitro powered scale car

For the past 2 or 3 years I have been trying to make a nitro powered car go over 100mph. Easy i hear you say you can buy one off the shelf that does 80mph lol.So with a bit of tweaking getting an extra 20mph should be easy. well it isn't for starters the quoted 80mph are more like 65mph and with a lot of tweaking tweaking 75mph.
Anyway back to my mission. i Started of with a Kyosho MP777 and installed 2 engines instead of the one i started off with 2 x rb c6bb engines i had the car speed checked at the shakespear county raceway using an optical speed trap 74mph was the best i could get very dissapointing so back to the drawing board.
what i need is more power and higher gearing. so i have know upped the the engines to 2 os .28xz engines.
Now I had the power but the gearing was a problem so i had to have some custom gearing made
i tested the car once again at the UK r/c speed challenge in sept of last year I managed one run before the gearox let go and that was the end of the day for me but the one run i managed 89mph and won the fastest nitro car so things were looking up.
The car was also used for the Gadget Show and did actually achieve a guiness world record but i have still to reach the 100mph goal which i am hoping to achieve this year whan the weather improves.
I have also tried with other cars but 80mph was the best i could achieve pics below
and just for fun me and a few friends from TM like to do a few insane r/c car jumps lol

Would aerodynamics and drag not be a serious consideration? I'm not saying that you've not already given this consideration, just saying perhaps this is something that could be refined further? Custom body shells, modifying the underside of the chassis, low drag tyres etc?

Drag is obviousley a major factor but the main one is downforce. whan the car gets above 75mph without any downforce it will just take off and fly through the air. the tyres i use for the speed runs are a hard foam which gives exellent grip and also cuts down on the rotational mass of the running gear.

yes, the engines powerband is from 25,000rpm to 32,000rpm the car hits the powerband at 80mph which takes a run up of about 500ft i will have 1000ft plus slowdown if the car gets into its top range of the powerband it will be travelling at 115mph.
i have probably had the car at speeds close to 100 or even above in practice but without the optical speed trap its impossible to be sure. but cheers for info.

How on earth do you drive it at those speeds? Do you actually drive it, or just setting it going and hope it keeps going in the right direction?
My only experience with 'high speed' remote control cars was off-roaders going far faster than they were designed to on knobbly tires - once they got up to 30 mph or so I had minimal influence about where they went.

Ha ha it takes a bit of getting used to especially when you think your accelerating form 0 to 90 mph in under 5 secs lol
Hopefully this year i will have got all the bugs ironed out and the car will break the 100mph mark, mad really when you think it would beat my griffith 500 from 0 to 100 (if i ever get there lol)

It looks like a great project Chris. I saw the episode on the gadget show and it's cool to read a bit more about the car. What I find most impressive is the performance you have been able to get out of a relatively standard chassis and configuration, well done. Please keep us posted on your progress and any vids of a successful run would be exciting to see.
That looks great, I watched the Gadget Show episode with interest, as I'm pretty sure you could get faster (for less money) with electric these days.
At those sorts of speeds would you not need to think about downforce? Don't put a spoiler on it or anything, but perhaps a kind of Venturi set-up or something?

Nice work going for the fastest IC RC! I remember following the first couple of RCCA Fastest RC challenges, and it seems the really fast guys are the builders who remain stable at high speeds, rather than just throwing power at the thing. One advantage with electric vehicles is that you can package things more easily, but with big nitro setups your packaging is constrained my the motors and tanks etc.

I'm sure you have done a lot of research into the methods use to improve top speed; reducing frontal area, aero drag, mech drag and increasing power.
I'd be interested to know what body design you primarily use for the high speed runs. Does it run a flat underbody? The saloon body you show with the big cooling hole in the windscreen may be producing lift at the back due to the air exiting underneath the car. Good call with the faired-in wheelarches though.
