I used to enjoy knocking up the burago kits many years ago. Is there anything similar around today (preferably with everything you need in one box) for the (very) amateur modelmaker?
There are some Tamiya kits that might fit the bill. They're partially-completed and cost in the region of £250 I think. Other than that I'm not aware of anything else out there. You could look on e-Bay for a Pocher kit. These are 1:8 scale and incredibly detailed, (you start by building the engine up from crankshaft/con-rods/pistons etc and go from there). As they are no longer produced they fetch handsome prices and can be a b*gger to build, (they're Italian and things don't always quite fit the way they should). Bodies are plastic but there's lots of metal components and, where appropriate, leather to be sewn for the seats. They did a lovely 911 and lots of more classic stuff but it's a limited supply now; hence the prices.
www.scaleautoworks.com is an American site dedicated to Pocher and will give you a very good insight into what's achievable................but be warned; it's easy to get carried away, but maybe not to the extent of a $2k metal transkit for the F40 kit - good as it mey be.
Have a look; you've nothing to lose but your sanity.

Bit pricey though.
