Tamiya Porsche 959 1/12
Discussion
I have one of these from when I was young, its still got the box and manual, all the orginal parts and that, technigold moter etc. the porsche sheel is a bit beat up, and I did a terrible paint job as a kid! But still has the drivers bit inside and lights steering wheel bits etc.
My question is, do you think its workthing cleaning it up and finding a shell, decals and making it back into its former glory?

Yep. 959's are collectable especially if they still have the driver etc.
Get onto Tamiyaclub and sell it on there.
I paid a small fortune (couple of hundred) for Roops 959 and that was in bad condition. He then spent a long time hunting for a new shell which also wasnt cheap.
email Roop for more info - I still have my Tamiyas but dont collect any more, I know he is still on the scence tho and can tell you more.

It's funny as a kid I always liked the Tamiya models, but always had Mardaves as they were indestructible (and I really needed that!) Now I'm older and know how to look after things I find myself lusting after the models I loved as a kid, modelsport has loads of new releases of most of the buggies including the frog!
You can expect to pay a small fortune for a new body as they are like gold dust. The plastic is very thin and easily damaged, so they were commonly replaced and hence are in short supply and high demand.
I've seen boxed bodies alone go for £200. A set of Rothmans decals will be £20+ (these were pulled due to being tobacco advertising, and replaced with 'Racing' - worth much less with these)
You can get replicas but obviously this will affect the value of the restored car.
Ideally what you want to do is clean up the original body as best you can, the paint can be stripped and repaired using various methods.

I have turned down offers of £75 for my new-in-pack 'Rothamans' decals. You can get 'Racing' ones for £25 or so.Gassing Station | Scale Models | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
