hey guys

Ive owned a few Nitros in my time and Ive always wanted to step up to a petrol version.

these models have always retailed for over a 1000 pounds but over time they have come down to more realistic prices but still expensive.

There are a few models to mention but I came across this one

ShengQi 1/5th Scale Petrol Radio Controlled Monster Truck.

have any of you guys got this model, have you had any bad experiences. they retail for about the same price as a decent nitro model and im just worried that they are not to good.

so I would like to hear from anyone out there who has any good experiences or possibly horrible experiences and any useful advise to guide me before splashing out 400 pounds.ive attached a link for anyone who is interested

Greg, Free Adverts in the classifieds... you will find the rules on adverts pretty clear and you could fall foul of the mods with such a blatant ad.

Back on topic, mate of mine has an HPI 5b with the 26cc engine upgrade, he highly rates that truck/buggy.

I've got an HPI Baja also. Fantatstic bit of kit. Fast, robust (unless you're a complete nutter), very well thought out buggy. If you go for the SS (more £'s) then it comes as a kit which makes a very enjoyable build.

The only real issue with the cheaper Chinese stuff is parts availability. I had an FG Marder and is was a pile of poo. Sold it after 3 months as every time I took it out, something broke - usually in the transmission. The story went something like this :

1 - Standard Marder. First run. Stripped drive pinion.
2 - Replace plastic drive pinion with metal item.
3 - Second run. Stripped spur gear.
4 - Replace plastic spur gear with metal item.
6 - Third run. Grenaded diff.
7 - Replace diff with uprated item.
8 - Fourth run. Broke rear A-arm.
9 - Replace A-arm with standard part.
10 - Sell POS buggy and rue selling my HPI Savage which was utterly bulletproof in comparison.

It's not as if I was being hard on it. The standard cars just can't handle big torque reversals in the transmission when running off-road. It was even the stock 26cc motor. Five of my mates had FG's of varying descriptions (Marders, Beetles, Monster Trucks etc) and we all had the same problems. Although one time, one fella's ran away and the failsafe hadn't worked. It went flat out aross a field (probably doing over 30mph) smashed into a tree which turned it round, it came flying back across the field and ran into a bush and stalled. No damage. WTF...!!!??? I don't know any of my mates that still have them - it's not as if we're mugs when it comes to driving or looking after this stuff either.

Personally I'd go with an HPI Savage. I still miss mine. Incredibly tough piece of kit. Forget hopping up with alloy bling and all that crap. Stock plastic parts is all you need, a 5-cell battery pack for the receiver helps beef up the steering and don't forget to add a failsafe (about £15). look after the engine and it's a blinder. If you want something that perhaps isn't quite as quick but handles better - T-Maxx or Revo. All good trucks and tough as old boots.

Guys

thanks for all the useful, info, Im planning on going to visit my folks at the end of the year abroad where there is massive potential to use what ever truck I purchase to its full potential.

This will also help me to go around to shops and get some more expert advise.

thanks once again.

I just wonder if we were unlucky. I mean, it's not as if we abused the things at all. On the contrary, they were very well looked after. But then five or more start to show the same symptoms, it's a bit obvious there's an issue. I wonder if FG have fixed it in later versions...? Ours were fin on-road but get them fast on anything but smooth grass (ie: anything where the wheel might come off the ground and induce torque reversal) and bang goes the transmission...

I heard the Baja 5b is pretty good although the stock pipe is a incredibly restrictive and the buggy is not that quick, stock. It's over £100 for a decent pipe on those things which bumps the price up a lot. I think the 5b and Marder are overpriced from the word go. Look at the quality of engineering you get in a helicopter for the same money. No comparison.

Hi Guys,

I got a Shengqi 1/5th Hummer two weeks ago and I love it but also hate it...

LOVE IT
Its the most fun you can have in the park with your clothes on. laugh
Even in standard form its a bit of a beast, whether you run it flat out or send it up and down ditchs and jumps.

HATE IT
The fuel tank leaks like petrol was free - terrible design flaw where pipes come into in/out of it.
First run - one wishbone broken & top shell mount snapped off - BUT I did roll it a couple of times and do crazy turns, so I'm blaming myself.
Remote control has the cheapy plastic feel (although its claimed to be OEM Futaba)
The chassis screws do seem to loosen up but a bit of glue should sort that out.
For the claimed 2bhp it seems restricted (perhaps for the stock plastic parts/has a bit of hose as an exhaust) - I suspect it has tuning potential!

For the price its perfect to find out if you'll get into large scale petrol RC without commiting to a £1000 spend.
IMO its too early to say if the parts are just going to keep breaking as I did treat it rough.
Replacement parts are available, plastic ones are cheap enough but probably worth the extra for alloy components.

I've heard that the manufacturer of these is working on an ALL alloy model, so it will be interesting to find out the pricing and how competitive it is to the high end of the market.

Hope that helps,

Mark.

Nitrotek are not one of the greatest manufacturers in the world and suffer with reliability and parts availability.
Your better off buying an FG truck, or an MCD as parts are more likely to be got hold of in this country or even at your local model shop.

I have a Protech Gator which is essentialy an FG Race Marder with an FG Leopard body. So all my parts are available from FG.
