I went into my local model shop today and *tadaa* the new Airfix Doctor Who set had arrived! It would have been unpardonable not to purchase it!

To cut a long story short, the detail on the Doctor and Martha really is as good as it appeared in the photos. I'm not looking forward to painting them though, the detail is tiiiiiny! The Doctor even has the correct tread on his converse trainers.

So, despite what was said in "The Money Programme" a few weeks ago, they DID manage to get them into the shops by Christmas (if only just).

Yup. Given that they are on Ebay and in the local shop (but not Hannants - maybe they were all pre-sold) then I'd say quite a few made it over. The instruction manual is excellent, several pages devoted to painting techniques and so on. A vast improvement on the old diagrams.

I expect that there are still many issues to be sorted out following Hornby's buyout of the old Humbrol/Airfix group. I'm amazed they have been able to get anything sorted over the past twelve months or so. They inherited a very complicated state of affairs with massive problems over mould ownership, mould access and the need to ship the moulds to new locations so production could recommence.

it was still amusing to have a large van pull up outside the shop and what did we get? two formula one cars.
according to the trade press the group is still making money

Hornby have been very successful over the past ten years or so. Taking on Airfix is a bit of a gmable for them but if anyone can get the brand back up and running properly, it will be Hornby.
