Hi I'm wanting a car that's cheap but has a race pedigree; maybe I'll take it racing... I've been told different things by nearly everyone I've asked! some say get a high end Tamiya, others say low end Losi? - but this one guy swore on his life that a Kyosho Lazer is the way to go.... scary!

Does anyone have one / know about this model? OR have any other suggestions (£250 budget to RTR)

I still have one of the original Lazer cars, they are bullet-proof.

I have not been racing for a few years now so can't say if the modern version is as good, but then again Kyosho are a pretty good brand and if they are still going strong today them I would think their products are still very good.

Not the cheapest, but you get what you pay for smile

His name wasn't James was it?

Don't know much about the Lazer as I've just bought a Tamiya (DF03) Avante 2 to start racing with again, I got it off ebay new, for about £75 inc P&P, quite impressed with the way it went together and there's plenty of cheap upgrades around too. Had to buy all the rest of the gear to go with it but you could easily get up and running within your budget.

However, I wanted a 4wd, there are plenty of other options if you look at 2wd too. Especially the RTR Associated RC10B4, it's just won the world championships again and all you need is a charger and batteries.

Sorry just wondering, there's a guy I used to race with who moved up to London who thinks that every incarnation of the Lazer has been the best car in the world EVER!

I'm near Chepstow so my nearest club is Caldicot, I haven't quite finished building the car yet so don't knwo whether I can acutally drive still. smile

Well that's a good sign! I just ordered one on the cheap; RTR. The guy says that it can be upgraded to fook, with Lipo, brushless and load of other crap which I didn't understand smile Should be fun, and the Lazer seems to get praised all over so it seems a safe bet.

Glad to hear it! I've run Kyosho in the past and they do make good cars.

The danger with this sport is getting carried away with the upgrades, you can easily spend more money on it than you need to smile

Enjoy

I used to race Kyosho Lazers (ZX & ZXR) in the early nineties. Nice cars, but a bit heavy (ZX). They were never as competitive as the Schumacher CATs and Yokomo Dogfighters of the day but were very well built and easy to work on. They were always the best cars to introduce newcomers to the hobby. The modern day Lazer, the ZX-5, is a good car, but surprisingly fragile in my experience and can be difficult to find parts for.

If you were to get a buggy and try racing I’d recommend a basic Team Associated RC10B4 RTR for 2wd. 4WD is much more difficult to find a car for. Tamiya make some great fun cars for bashing around, the Dark Impact series are excellent, but the limitations of these are quickly found once taken to a race meeting, so I couldn’t recommend if racing was your intention. Just for messing around it’s great though. For racing, possibly a second hand Losi XX4. Though the Losi is totally focused on racing and wouldn’t be much fun for just bashing around, and parts availability can be difficult.

It might be a good idea to join the forum on www.oople.com and post the same question.

I used to race one years ago. At the time all the 'serious' 4wd people at my club had Lazers or Procats. Then the Lazers started to die out and as previously mentioned it moved onto Pro/Bosscats and Dogfighters. Loved mine.

So Lazer's have become more obsolete? I hope they're not too outdated... are they still raced at all? Do you guys know of any race meets in London / or outskirts?

The Lazer ZX5 was released recently (see review here: http://www.oople.com/rc/photos/zx5/ ) so isn't outdated and are still raced.

I'd check out the forum on www.oople.com for race venues around London.

The original Lazers were heavy and never proved as popular as the Optima Mid that it replaced, certainly against competition of the time it was never as succesful. But that happens to all manufacturers at some stage, even Shumacher who were dominant with the Cat XLS don't even make a 1/10 electric off road car anymore.

I bought a Tamiya DF03 (Dark Impact series) and that's not classed as highly competive but I'm happy to race it as it's been 11 years since I 'retired'. If I get on well I may change the car in the future, but somehow I think it'll be a while before it's the car limiting my results!

Hey
i have a Lazer R
Have raced it a few times about 5 years ago....still a very quick car even compared to 2005-2007 models. 4wd belt driven bad boy. Obviously its a buggy, but i converted mine to a touring car. very easy to changfe back buggy status.

I run fancy saddle pack batteries in mine, and what a diffrence that makes!!!

Wish I'd kept mine. I had 3, a ZX, ZX-R and ZX-RR. As mentioned above the weight was the main issue, and the continuous breakage of the front shock mount on the front diff housing (easily sorted with a mod). I, well my dad, spent a lot on mine trying to get the weight out of it but it was never ultimately as competitive as the Yokomo YZ-10 or the quicker CAT2000s. In the end we got a sponsored Tenth Tech Predator. It still sits downstairs in its box - still looks the nuts!

If you're dicking about in car parks the Lazer is great. If you're racing then it's a Losi XX4 or Team Associated car. Well worth the extra cash imo.
