What model to buy
Discussion
I enjoyed building the tamiya hornet. So much Id like to build something else. Can anyone recommend a general non rc model to build, something fun, slightly challenging but not too difficult (for a beginner) and maybe something with moving parts. I was thinking along the lines of a small plane perhaps. Not really sure what Id like to build - if anyone build anything small which they particularly enjoyed, feel free to recommend it
Hi mate.
I built a cracking 1/24 scale model of a Lancia Stratos. Wasn't too bad, only as complicated as you want to go really, I got really involved and painted everything up on the car!
I can't remember who the kit was by though, I think it was a Revell kit.
Tamiya do some really good 1/24 truck kits too, I built a few of those and if you buy a tractor/trailer kit, they look really cool on your mantle piece.
Honest.

I moved on to boats after plastic lost it's novelty. First was the Billings kit of the Smit Rotterdam, kin huge ocean going Rig Support Vessel.....took me 5 years. Then I built a North Atlantic fishing vessel by Billings called the Nordkap. Both of these were R/C, obsessively detailed and weathered but you can buy simpler ones. If you want a laugh look at the Robbe catalogue of working fireboats (great for chasing ducks)

That post is worthless without pics 5 years?! There are many creatures on earth whose entire life spans dont even stretch that far Id probably enjoy building something which wasnt made of plastic. Id never considered boats. A type craft I do admire greatly is the old british war/sailing ships, with rigging, canons down the sides, along the lines of the victory and mary rose, although Im sure to build one with wood Id need a lot of time and more skill than I have. Can you buy simple wooden kids of old sailing ships? Im guessing not...

oh yes http://www.westbourne-models.com/erol.html#1X0
If you're up for a challenging (but not too tricky) build, how about an electric RC plane:
http://www.electrifly.com/largeelectrics/gpma0156....
You can download the manual from there to see what's involved. It's a fairly standard construction and being electric means no messing about with engines, glow-fuel etc (unless you like those noisey 2-strokes). Also you should be able to use the batteries from your Hornet
The kit's not badly priced here:
http://www.sussex-model-centre.co.uk/shopexd.asp?i...
although you'll also need a motor, propeller, covering and radio gear so depending on what you've already got it could be nearer £200 all in.

That looks like a great project. I was browsing the trainer section of that site last week - Im surprised at how cheap the planes themselves are. Whats the name of the plane in the top left corner, on the header of the design which stretches across the top of the Sussex model center's site? I think I might buy a plane later this year, build it this winter, ready to fly for next spring. Apache has me hooked on the idea of a boat, if I can find a warship I like which is easy enough to build http://www.electrifly.com/largeelectrics/gpma0156....

That would be a Cessna:

although there are much cheaper ones available than that kit
