Thinking of having a go at the 1:8 scale petrol/nitro RC scene, what are the best kits on the market for a seasoned electric racer who's interested in racing nitro or petrol off roaders. Any major performance/cost differences between nitro or petrol?

hi there first time im giveing advice on something so it kinda feels wierd but I will do my best

for a start try many of the rc websites available on the internet these days, and you should get excellentt advice.. www.rcworld.com is a great one to start with.

Ive had many rc cars in my time and ive found thunder tiger to be of excellent build quality and infact ive had no major engine or any other problems before. Ive had electric but I found nitro to be the best and most excellerateing. Ive got a eb 4 suburu impretza replica 1:8scale at the moment which is good for 50-60miles per hour. ive just converted it into a off road car as I found it difficult to find a decent car park to race this thing so now I can race at my local park so consider your location. theres a shop in camden town london which stock a wide range of rc cars and I found them to be the best so if I find the contact number I will send it to you.

If you are serious about this hobby like myself myself maybe consider going second hand first, I spent 300 pounds on my car and on ebay ive seen the exact same model for around 80 from some poor sod who used it once and left it in his loft, there are so so so so many bargains these days on the internet so buying direct from a shop can proove very costly. most models come with a remote so you should have no problems, I hope that you have luck in finding your rc car, ive just started saving for a heli, ive done the car thing now and helis seem great.

good luck

Seriously, have a look at the HPI Savage. Nitro, 30+ mph, and can take some serious abuse!

Thanks for the heads up.

I've raced electric for years so I would not call myself a newby to thr world of RC cars. But Nitro is a new arena to me. I have often looked at the HPI range as they look pretty sturdy machines.

I'm not interested in buying to play with it in a car park or local park (major issues with hitting someone for starters!!!) I want to go racing.

Anyone know of a good off-road club in the Beds/Herts/Bucks area who race these things?

If you want to go racing, start looking at things like the Hyper8, or lighning buggies, they are fast and strong straight out of the box, and can be upgraded as you needs/funds allow.

definately lok at the Rex-x, they will take loads of abuse and arn't that much, esp. second hand. I started with one but it needs a new front end as i ran it in to a tree, but other than that it has not let me down. it runs on nitro which, to my knowledge is faster.
you should get road wheels aswell when buying them as its sooo fun in the wet, lol

Ive got a HoBao Hyper 7 TQ Sport. Started this winter, and really enjoy it. Totally standard part from harder springs and a Futaba S3305 Metal HD stering servo.
