The missus bought me one of these for Xmas .

It is a 1/5th off road buggy in the style of full size baja buggies.

It uses a 23cc petrol engine , just pour in your v-power and away you go - and boy its loud !!

Cant wait for some warmer weather for more playtime , and first thing on the shopping list is a tuned exhaust

Any other PH'ers into large scale rc ?

How are you finding it? Great fun I imagine. The good thing about larger scale cars is their ability and speed across grass.

I used to be into 1/8 rallycross back in the 87-91. Recently I looked into the 1/6 offerings. I have been reccommended Hormann as being the strongest and most immune to my butter fingers. It comes with all alloy construction without the need for the usual expensive options. Looks ok. www.hoermann-modelltechnik.de/index_b.php

However I may yet still go for 1/8 again, so I will see. The 1/8 cars have far more development spent on their design over the last 20 years. Their handling is amazing due to a small engine with a low centre of gravity, 4x4 triple diff transmission and spot on geometry.

Click the left blue "movie" button for insane 1/8 handling demo...

By comparison the high C of G make the 1/5 & 1/6 scale seem a bit roll over happy...

It's great fun ,thanks .
I also looked at Hormann and FG etc but the Baja 5b just looks so much better IMO . When you see a Baja 5b up close , you really appreciate the engineering ,quality and thought that's gone into it's design .
I know what you mean about the handling of the 1/8th Rallycross buggies , but I didnt want a race buggy - I wanted a FUN buggy - and my god its fun !
It always draws a crowd , its cheap to run on unleaded pump petrol , and I think the 23cc engine sounds so much better than the high revving units in the smaller scale cars .
Its really loud now , it will be REALLY loud when I get the tuned pipe for it ..
Here's a quick vid of one in action :

And you shouldnt be allowed to have this much fun in sand dunes -this is a great video

Shouldn't the driver have hands free for the mobile phone?

No problem just struck me when I saw it.
Been involved with loads of model cars over the years but never 1/5 scale stuff.

Busby, the handling looks prety decent from the video. It does remind me of the old kyosho ultima in some respects - particuarly the chassis and wheelie ability.

Where do you run it? I used to use my 1/8 over empty football pitches, car parks or offroad patches here and there. Since those days a lot of the best spots have houses on now! Plus I think a car that loud and potentially dangerous will have limited areas available to them. Parks are a bit of a no go I guess. That's the benefit of quieter electric I suppose.

I think it is actually designed by the same bloke that designed the Ultima .
Luckily , I live very close to Cannock Chase which has miles of forest tracks etc to play on . A local beauty spot called Chasewater is very close too , which has a large grass/gravel area to have fun on . I took it to Chasewater on Sunday and there was a young lad and his dad using a Schumacher Havoc - looked good fun !
You're right though , I do have to consider where I use it very carefully so as not to annoy people !! Most people just stand and watch to be fair though !

An idea which is more socially friendly is that of converting 1/8 into brushless electric. The speed is at least as fast, offers near silent running by comparison, no need for the engine start up palaver, plus decent cells are getting much cheaper now. All the convenience of electric with the fun of large scale. Here's one, the video link is at the bottom of the page of text:
