Hornby trains - any enthusiasts on here?
Discussion
Sad alert.
Spotter Ready for questions.
I do have an excuse though. It's genetic, my older brother got thingy pattern baldness from the old man and i got trains (sounds like an unfortunate medical condition). As the other half says - you can hide the trains but if you're bald everyone knows!
I cusrrently have 4 model railways and own shares in a real life steam engine and railway.

Excellent. The boy has three trains : Flying Scotsman, Mallard and the Duke of Something. The Duke is great runner but the other two are stop/start and jerky. Are they knackered or do they just need a bit of oil or summat? So far as I can see the power comes from the tender which pushes the engine; is that right? Will the motor in the tender be easy to access?
I had Scalextric when I was young and know nothing about Hornby.
Thanks to everyone.

Pretty much as per Tonker, but would also advise cleaning the track as well - never hurts to do this regularly.
One other thing to look out for is if your son uses his stuff on a carpet/track mat on a carpet/rug - fluff gets everywhere in the woking parts.
Oh and the Duke is probably
The Duke of Gloucester

My sad list now (00)
5 x A4's = 2 x Hornby -Mallard and Sir Nigel Gresley, 3 x Bachmann - Unnumbered as yet but will all be Haymarket engines.
3 x A3's - All Haymarket engines when finished - still picking names/numbers.
2 x V2's - both bachman unamed
4 x J72's
3 x J94's
1 x 04 Diesel
2 x N4's
2 x B12's
1 x D49
1 x Standard 4
1 x Standard 4 tank
Also have started a TT collection and am working up the courage to invest in a 0 gauge kit.
How old is the Britannia?

Sorry to say
you are
welcome to the club.
entry fee = £0 please leave your pride at the door
Not really into modern stuff on a modelling basis - have a Deltic and a 40 but can't realy see past the wonder of steam as it were. Having said that some of Helijan and Bachmanns stuff is fantastic - bachmanns 66 is a cracking model. Almost as impressive as the real thing.
Get the feeling that your probably not a spotter
I for my sins................

God probably easier to come out of the closet than admit to liking model trains!
This season I am mostly into American HO - precisely because of rubbish running of OO locos - £25 Bachmann runs a dream out of the box, never needs cleaning, runs on anything....
Best wishes (and puts anorak back on)

Had a run in with a couple of them too!!
Chap on the ELR wanted to buy the engine from us but wouldn't commit to a price. Then when we declined his response was less than impressive.
To many people seem to want to make a hobby (thats what it is at the end of the day) politikal! (mis-spelling deliberate).
Thats how my dad and I ended up at the Eden Valey Railway. We visisted about 30 preserved lines and went for the one with what we found to be the best group of people. Albeit the railway is woefully underfunded/staffed/resourced but the work involved sems to be better for it, the people involved do make the differance.
Biggest pain is the drive - Rosyth in Fife to Warcop in Cumbria.
You close to the ELR?

Clockwork, none of this electrical gubbins! Shame I don't get to use them, haven't the time or the inclanation really
