Brushless?

Been away from the RC world for a good few years now. What's all this about brushless motors! Sounds interesting, but what are the advantages and disadvantages of them, do they perform better??

Probably the main disadvantage is that an equivalent brushless contoller is more expensive but prices are getting better.

Otherwise:

+ Efficiency around 90% or better (very low heat losses)
+ Low heat losses means high power out for low weight

A good example would be something like the MEGA 20/30/3 that I run in ducted fans. This is a '600' class motor that weighs 225gm and easily runs at 1,4 kW. There is nothing brushed that comes anywhere near these sort of figures even in the 'Ultra' types.
