Probably the main disadvantage is that an equivalent brushless contoller is more expensive but prices are getting better.
Otherwise:
+ Efficiency around 90% or better (very low heat losses)
+ Low heat losses means high power out for low weight
A good example would be something like the MEGA 20/30/3 that I run in ducted fans. This is a '600' class motor that weighs 225gm and easily runs at 1,4 kW. There is nothing brushed that comes anywhere near these sort of figures even in the 'Ultra' types.
