Models of Yesteryear, are they worth anything?
Discussion
From age of about 4 until my teens I used to collect Matchbox Models of Yesteryear. Now aged nearly 33 I have just done the duty Crimo visit to mother, only to be told to "take those cars out my loft" as I'm sure 32 little toy cars were really in the way! So now I have them all at my house about to go in the loft again, and the truth be told I don't really have any interest in them anymore and would rather sell them and see a few quid.
I remember all those years ago when I went to toy fairs (oh my god that sounds sad, trust me I am not a geek!!!) stuff like the 1918 RAF Crossley Tender was fetching about £30 back then, yet now they are sat on eBay with no bids and no reserve. Has the fact that in that time the internet and eBay arrived, presumably giving people a much easier way of getting hold of the stuff, knocked the bottom out of the values? The missus suggests dusting my parka off and actually going to a toy fair to sell them, but to be honest the thoughts of being sat there all day, still coming away with most of them, and possibly even getting spotted there does not really appeal. Instead I mmight put them in the loft until I'm really old when they might be worth a few quid more. Does anyone have any views on this???
They are all good condtion, boxed, and I have a list if anyone can advise or if they are interested.
Thanks!!

You're lucky - in almost exactly the same situation my Mother 'having a sort out' threw all the boxes away... I know have 30-odd MIN* Yesteryears

I was also recently disappointed by the worth of my Starwars figure collection going on Ebay prices (once professionally valued at nearly £2k).
Guess it shows how much traders/shows were keeping the values up?
Pick up the Christmas edition of Model collector as they have a price guide in the issue which should cover all the models you know have in your loft!
To be honest, unless they are extremely rare then you havn't suddenly come across a golden nest egg. The older models do sometimes fect a few quid at auction, but only if they are very very rare indeed, though I still think some of the values thrown around this market are simply silly.
I have some 500 models all boxed away, simply because I do not have the space at present to display them. A couple of years back, with the then updated price list in my hand, I went through the lot and found that almost all were worth no more than a couple of quid each. There were just 2 or 3 that were worth around £30-40, but that does not make you rich does it!!
Interesting to hear the point about the Star Wars figures. Another craze that passed me by in the 80's. I had friends that collected them all, and I remember watching one of the 'kids' editions of the antique roadshows on BBC when a guy came along with a complete collection. The expert said that despite them all being in very good condition and still in the packs, the collection as a whole was not worth anything!
