Bespoke models?
Discussion
Hi David,
I don't know a specific model manufacturer that does commissions, but Grand Prix Models (www.grandprixmodels.co.uk, 01727 845645) may be able to put you in contact with a manufacturer that can help. Pricing will depend on scale (see www.diecasts.biz/images/SizeChart. for approximate sizes).
Good luck and keep me posted on your results!
Cheers,
Iain

Hi Dave - I recently had a few conversations with various modelmakers about a short run of Gilberns: A 1/43 master is £3,000 from George Turner Models. George is REAL good - I made one of his Cheetahs a few years ago, and it was one that practically assembled itself. Many of the kits I've built required so much work that it would have been easier to start from scratch. One of my colleagues spoke to John Shinton about a Cheetah, but at 1/8 scale, and was quoted on the order of £10,000. Having said that, look at John's stunning Lotus Europa (for Banks) and you'll see where the money goes.
The point with either of these, is that by the time you have made a pattern and a mould from that, there is a reasonable lifespan of somewhere between several and many models that can be made in the mould, so you might as well make a run of them to amortise your costs.
A lot of the pricing depends on the level of detail you are after - if the model is going to reside in a case, screwed down to a base, there is little point in worrying about what is inside. If you want full interior, opening panels, engine detail, etc, all of this will cost, so that an exterior model will be a lot less than one with all the goodies.
Ask yourself how many Mosler models you could sell, and it may help determine your next move. But remember, a one-off will probably cost the same as a master to reproduce from.
