There's some amazing detail on there, well done (I assume it is your work?). The exhaust staining looks very realistic, especially in this shot

That affect can be acheived by carefully blending diluted coats of Tamiya acrylic clear blue, red, yellow and 'smoke' on either a burnished metal surface or one that has been treated with a metalcote. Looks great on bike exhausts- experimentation is the key.

The exhaust is made from real titanium heated over the gas hob till the colours turn like this.
But now it's easier with products like these decals

Nah, that's cheating.

If you were depicting, say, the heraldry on a 1:24 scale knight's shield, would you carefully paint in the lion rampart motif using a 00 brush? Or think f*ck it- I'll just slap a transfer on it!

I know, means to an end and all that but maybe I'm a purist...

I think it depends on what you want out of the hobby. I know some people are happy to buy finished models on ebay for huge sums of money because they want the model and are quite aware (for whatever reason) that they are not able or are not willing to put that effort in themselves.

And for people who build for their own enjoyment they may enjoy certain parts more than others, I really enjoy painting, and although I enjoy building it is not to the same extent so to a "builder" I may seem sloppy in my build but over OTT in my paint. The most important bit of this hobby is "do it for yourself" there is no better reason.
