Used to fly model rockets when I was a kid, the ones with a little solid fuel motor (basically a firework without the pretty colours). Anyway, dug them out the other day thinking of taking my 6 year old out to fly them again.

I used to fly them from the local rec. However, being older and wiser now, or at least older, I'm wondering if there are rules and regulations covering the firing of these rockets, which are essentially an explosive device encased in cardboard and balsa, hundreds of feet into the sky from council property?

Does anyone know anything about this? Or even better, know of any sites in the South West where launching these is permitted?

Obviously I want to do this for my son and as a 30 year old will get no fun out of it myself whatsoever

I used to launch one up here in Scotland (until the recovery wadding went on fire and the thing broke when it crashed to Earth) from the local rec. We were there quite often, and nobody from the council or the neighbouring houses complained or stopped us. I can't help with the regulations though, but I think it's okay if you are not in a flight path (a guy got nicked in Edinburgh for flying it in the flightpath of planes going into the airport). If there are regulations, I think they will be the same or similar to those for setting off fireworks.

Cheers,

Easier to seek forgiveness than permission ...

as long as you have considered the risks and honestly believe it is safe.

First time I bought one of these was whilst on detachment to Goose Bay in Labrador, we built it, launched it, shat ourselves then read the instructions.

Do not launch near houses (married quarters next to us)

Do not launch near airfields or flight paths(we were on one)

Do not launch near ariels or radar (ditto)
