I just ordered an amazing little diesel aero engine from Australia. It's the finest engineered micro around and it's one of the smallest too...

Yup Davies Charlton (DC) Bambi was the same capacity, had one here for yonks before I sold it, Dates from the 50's. Bit fiddly to run & need reasonably high ether content but good fun, now flyable in Radio Models with micro or Nano radio gear.AT least you don't have to chase free flight models!

It will be used on a test bench to run in, then sit on my windowledge as a display for a while. I can't see I'll have time to put it in a small plane / glider until next summer, unfortunately.

It's amazing how small the micro radio gear is now, making the use of such low powered engines possible for rc use. More fun than free flight! Also more fun than messing with bungee's to launch gliders.

If you think thats small have a look at the size of some of the electric IC stuff over on www.rcgroups.com & some of the other sites that link off it. 5-6" span flying models with radio!

I've seen some of the sub micro electric planes and even the palm sized heli's. As amazing as they are I can't get too excited over hours spent charging up batteries and using silent mass produced electric motors. Small is great, but it's not my only goal.

I like the whole atmosphere of burning fuel, the running engine noise, the real engineering, plus the retro vibe is cool. The engine I've just bought it the result of one man's passion and a lifetime of experience becoming a master craftsman. Such products are increasingly rare today.

I guess it's like comparing a Zenith El Primero with a £4.99 Casio. Technically the Casio keeps better time, but that's not the point. The Zenith is a celebration of real craftmanship.

Have a poot around that site, loads of micro electric stuff flying, too damn old now to have decent enough eyesight for things that small.

They're more like erratic drunken bats, than smooth flying planes. They're ok for kids with access to their school sports hall, but useless outside.
