I have very recently discovered that Testors have an excellent website which contains a whole series of numbered video presentations of scale model construction techniques. They are shown in 3 to 6 minute segments and number over 30 separate programmes. It seems they have been running for a couple of years.

They are presented by a very personable (and self-deprecating at times) Aussie called Brett Green.

They do (obviously) tend to emphasise Testor products (such as their Aztek range of airbrushes) but that is not a problem. The programmes are extremely informative.

I would highly recommend a visit to their site and dowmloading these videos.

Thanks Eric, there's some useful stuff there (although the video of the model show in Telford is a bit, hmmmmm, boring).

Some people are hard to please

I think those clips are just put in to let people know that model making doesn't have to be carried out in isolation. I've been to the "Nationals" a number of times (although not since they moved to Telford) and it would have been nice to have had a closer look at some of the fantastic models that are on display there. However, there's not a huge amount you can cover in a three minute clip. If you want to be bored a bit more, there's also a similar feature on the 2004 US Nationals at Phoenix, Arizona.

However, I enjoyed watching the twenty odd video clips I downloaded over the weekend- some which featured real aircraft in action (a P40 and a PBY Catalina plus some close up shots of a Messerschmitt Bf-109G and a P-51D Mustang).
I'll download the rest eventually and then I'll keep an eye on the site for any new videos that will be added from time to time.

I'm not that hard to please, but the video of Telford could have been a bit more interesting.

In a slow Aussie monotone "Here's us walking into the show. Here's Revell's (pronounced strangely) stand with the new Junkers 841564567575.246848184897877B version 2 they will be releasing later this year (which you can't see very well on the video). Here's a big model of a UBoot which will be available soon. Here's some guys from Dave's Models dressed up as sailors. Here's another stand. That's Tim Jones on the left. Here's some stuff"

It could have done with showing more of the models up close. I couldn't bring myself to watch the US one after that.

Still, the rest of it was very good and very useful.

I get the impression that Mr Green shoots these videos on a strictly amateur basis and then edits and adds voice overs all on his own. I don't expect too much "slickness" on a project such as this but the overall instructional content is good.

As for the Junkers, it's a Ju290, and very impressive it is too.

Hint - the US nationals IS more boring. He has the Atlanta 2005 Nationals on the site as well but I haven't watched it yet.

Yeah, fair play to the guy for making the effort and the model tutorials are very interesting. Just need to find time to make some models now.

Same here. Work pressure and other committments often puts a stop to my modelling. This week, however, I resurrected a few ongoing projects (partly inspired by Brett) and hope to have them completed by the end of next week. They are all 1/72 scale aircraft - the Airfix Gloster Meteor III, the Airfix Spitfire Vb and the very old Frog/Novo Fairey Firefly Mk.1.

Good find Eric

I'm halfway through the Airfix Blenheim IV (impulse buy the other week) and the IL2 is just about at the painting stage.

Finished (well almost) a side project of repainting a 109G-10 into captured RAF colours from a reference I found (I didnt have any luft marking but had some spare RAF ones, just need to create (or borrow from another kit) some 'LW' squadron markings

The Airfix Blenheim is one I have squirrelled away for "future work" too. It's a bit of a mess of a model with far too many rivets (the scourge of Airfix kits in the 60s and 70s). I also have a couple of Frog/Novo short nose Blenheim 1s stashed away - including the recent cleaned up mould re-issue from Revell.

Have you heard that Revell will shortly be re-issuing the old Matchbox Supermarine Walrus? That'll be on my shopping list too.
