Scale Model World Telford '24
Discussion
Just got home after attending both days, and really enjoyed it. Seemed to be getting back to more like pre-Covid times; Three pretty full halls - I only noticed one empty table, and the competition in a separate room. Eduard and Special Hobby there again, with what seemed to me far more overseas visitors:
I’ve not completed many models since I last entered the competition in 2021, but I did use SMW as a deadline to get my Vulcan finished. After many late nights, I did - on Friday!..I ought to update the build thread on here to draw a line under it. I entered that with a couple of Airfix Spitfires. The Vulcan got Gold in the 1:72 “Any Source Detailed” class, and the David Hannant Memorial Award for use of aftermarket decals:
My son got a Silver medal for his Horten Ho.229. End of an era because it’s the last time he can enter the junior class of a competition:
I really like looking at the old 1960’s Revell kits on the trade stands, and Wonderland Models had a great selection this year. I’ve still not learned to buy a kit I want as soon as I see it; I missed an Arma Hobby Airacobra, and Academy B-29 by ‘coming back later’, but did get a Special Hobby Spitfire. Anyway, I guess the upside is that I can now use my unexpected Hannant voucher towards them.
Here are a few models that caught my eye. Enjoy:

Reward for perseverance on the Vulcan then.
The Horten looked ace here, bloody good for junior to place so high.
Note to self: I missed the comp entries as judging is Sat 11-3 so next time attend on the Sunday.
Proper Big Show as it should be, seems in rude health.
I was model blind half way through the second of three halls...always happens, same for car shows..just me? But not being predominantly in to planes I could just skim the tables of grey then green winged things but then be stopped in my tracks by Mulberry Dock dioramas, space stuff, animal/dinosaur/figure models, pretty much any diorama with a water theme
And I escaped with just one kit under my arm:
Bloody good day out.

Same here. By Sunday afternoon I’m lost - seen so many things I’m not sure even where I’ve seen them, or if I’ve seen them before. Particularly applies to models I’ve earmarked for possible purchase (I never learn). I found a stash of quite a few Revell re-boxings of the Matchbox French WW2 tanks and diorama base. Always fancied one, so decided to go back and get one on Sunday. I knew it was on the end of an isle, and in which hall, but could I find them? Nope. Couldn’t even find anything that resembled what was around them either in terms of other boxes etc.
Re. The junior class: the models entered are often indistinguishable from some of those in the adult classes. It’s impressive, and in many ways reassuring that some young people do have the patience to see difficult (and often demoralising!) processes through. I assume many, many more could, if they were interested enough to apply it to modelling.

Wow that Joan of Arc on horseback was very impressive i like stuff like that, congratulations on finishing the Vulcan and all that hard work being recognised ,well done to your son as well outstanding !
Thanks very much! Yes, Joan of Arc was great - by a very talented French modeller.I was there on the Saturday (a break from the normal full weekend). Picked up a Valiant and Black Buck Vulcan to complete the Airfix V Bomber collection. Some really good prices. Still find it amazing that one stall is selling stuff at full rrp and another with significant discount.
Went to the Eldorado Canyon talk which was very interesting and a personal thing for me as I lived on the flight path for Upper Heyford.

I was just updating my Vulcan thread, and commented about the Airfix Vulcan prices at Telford. I noticed it too - about 50% off RRP at most places, even the latest Black Buck version. Then again when you start it I think you'll soon realise why it's already in the bargain bucket category. Not sure if Airfix corrected the Shrike missile pylon error on the Black Buck version? Still unsure if that was a genuine error - that they thought the main gear door was the missile pylon, or if it was someone on a forum having a laugh?Went to the Eldorado Canyon talk which was very interesting and a personal thing for me as I lived on the flight path for Upper Heyford.
I've been after the latest Airfix Harrier GR.1 for a while, and after years of not seeing a single kit, there were dozens there at Telford, most discounted to £12.99 from £24.99, but still some selling at full price. I didn't get one in the end - I'm on an Airfix holiday for a while after my last 5 completions were their kits.
I'd like to build an Upper Heyford F-111 one day. Used to see them flying over Silverstone back in the day. I remember one day my Dad decided to find out where they were from, and we ended up parked at the end of the UH runway as they took off (closely watched by a huge American policeman in an even bigger car). Awesome.

I think Airfix mis-interpreted an old photo, and made the mounting the size of the main gear door, becasue in the photo the missiles were on a trolley under, but in front of the door. The angle of the photo (and possibly poor image quality) made it look like the door was the pylon, and *apparenty* Airfix copied it. I can't really believe they actually did that, but then again...
ETA looks like it was a jamming pod, not a missile:

I’m struggling to find a photo of the pod on a pylon, but you’re right about the mistake.
It's in the Britmodeller thread I linked to.I
