I'm working on a side project for my cortina where I am putting modern gauge mechanicals into the current gauge bodies and making a new face to match the originals. The gauge face is 3D printed and has been sanded and smoothed. I have painted it satin black like the original.

I'm at a point where I need to paint the numbers and the redline etc and was thinking about using model paint and a fine brush, my experience with this is from many years ago using humbrol enamel on various airfix models but wanted some advice on where to find a fine brush and if enamel is the right way to go?

Art shops, Warhammer shops and pretty much any model shop online will have fine brushes. I wouldn't though. I would try to find someone with an Alps printer that can print white on decals. Modelling forums are likely to have people with those.

If you are determined though, I would design it on a PC, print it off 1:1 scale on paper and perhaps trace it on, or pinprick through tiny holes around the letters. Draw on the character outline with a soft pencil and outline/fill with water based acrylic paint (not Tamiya, that is alcohol based). Water-based acrylic is far more forgiving than enamels, but you may have to do several layers.

Maybe use decals. If you do you will need to gloss varnish, then apply decals, than Matt varnish
