I like to have a modelling project on the go, and my favourite subject is boats. However I now share my house with the Cutty Sark, two speedboats, two MTBs, a Greek bireme, a Virginia pilot boat, an Oneida Admiralty model, a Mississippi paddle steamer, a Spanish 74-gun ship of the line and a Swedish gunboat. I don't really have room for another model 2-3 feet long...

Apart from the Master Korabel range, are there are any small model kits of sufficient complexity to keep me interested? (not ships in bottles)

How about a Riva Aquarama? Would love to build this myself, but I’m sure my talent would run out long before completion.

I've always liked this one. https://www.slecuk.com/mr-tom

Or the other option is one of the KeilKraft Ezebilt kits from this lot of plans.

I had a Neptune as a very young lad, it was built for me by my father.

The problem is the size - 850mm. It's the big brother of the Billing Boats Phantom I've just finished:

I like the retro factor - it takes me back to the KK catalogues I had as a teenager - but too simple now. I suppose I'm looking for something small but complex and unusual, the next challenge if you like.

That looks a great kit too! I see your point about the size.

Looking good, what did you end up making/using for the lights?

It's actually designed for radio control, though I didn't take that option. It's an easy kit to build, but remarkably hard to build well - the gloss sides caused me a lot of problems having to juggle stain, grain filler, sealer and lacquer - new ground for me. Had it looking just right but then the sealer dissolved the stain and I had to sand it back and start again... 'piano' gloss is very difficult!

The bollards and lights supplied were totally wrong from the Billings parts bin so I found some chromed torpedo cleats and fairleads. Ididn't fit lights as I just couldn't find anything in the right style and size. I think the finished model looks under-detailed, but I can't think what else to add, and it would probably spoil it if I did.

1/700 warships? Adding PE railings and rigging will give you the complexity you desire and you could fit a small fleet in limited space.

I like wrangling wood, but have you got a link I can ponder?

Here's the Master Korabel model - I might do another but I liked this one the most because it's different. It really is small!

Most of the usual suspects, Tamiya, Trumpeter, Takom do a range with the usual aftermarket providing PE. An interesting source is Flyhawk, their deluxe kits include the etch, metal barrels and rigging elastic. I’ve got one in my stash, keep taking it down, looking at it and putting it back as too much smile

This isn’t a packet of mites, they are turned metal bollards and a 4” gun.

I made a bit of a start, comedy massive pound coin included for scale.

Thanks MBBlat.

I made an Airfix HMS Nelson a few years ago (my first plastic model since childhood when I made many). It was an impulse buy from eBay. But it was strangely uninspiring; merely sticking pre-shaped parts together. The finished model has no soul, no individuality. I've tried airbrushing, which I know you have to do to get better results and found it an utter PITA. So perhaps in the winter, I might do another MK kit, but I'm sure now that it needs to be wood.

If its a challenge you are after, i seem to remember there was a company that made extreme detail brass and copper kits of boats and trains which included tiny rivets for riveting the hull plating to the webs and longitudinal's.

The deck structures were likewise constructed and if a waterborne model was needed, then seams were soft soldered afterwards.

In my memory there were a number of boats, Thames tugs and such around 16 inches length. Highly detailed but quite delicate, as the brass shim used was very thin.

Just cant remember the name of the company, but i do remember they were quite expensive and although very tempted at the time, i could not justify the cost then. This would have been around the mid nineties but am sure some of the excellent modelers on here would remember the companies name and be able to advise if they are still afloat.

Sounds interesting; certainly worth a look if anyone can recall the name,

Not sure if this is the exact model type being referred too. But might fit the bill 1:26:Scale 46 cm long.
The is a photo log of a commission build on maritime models.

I found out that it's a Constructo kit. Doesn't seem available now, but a Thames steam launch, as long it's small, would be a nice project.
