Hi - can anyone recommend a decent first RC that will withstand a 3 year old but also won’t be too fast for him?

He has a go with a 1/18 Range Rover - the cheapie ones - but it got abused pretty quickly and wouldn’t give it a day! He loved it though…

I bought my 3 year old an FTX Tracer. You can turn down the power on the controller for them and wind it back up again when it’s your turn. They seem to have a great rep for being robust. Also, they’re only about £65.

I didn’t realise you could turn down the speed/ power - that’s smart. It was my main concern. Will check it out. Thanks

I second the FTX Tracer, I bought one from my son when he was 4.

As mentioned you can turn down the speed, plus they are pretty bullet proof and have survived many a trip to concreate skate parks.

I have an FTX crawler, might be a Rampage or something like that, it was about £100. I got that because the crawlers are a lot of fun, but also slow enough for the kids to play with.

I think it's a little too fast for him... he's just turning 3...! Had a look at FTX Hooligan which is smaller... but seems very quick too. How slow does the speed adjustment make them? And FTX seem to have some crawlers, but are they more fragile?

This appeals, but maybe too fragile? Better speed for him for sure.

My son is a bit older, 7, but I got him a 1:24 crawler recently. It seems pretty good. My 4 year old also uses it too. There's the 3 speed options on the controller, but being a crawler it doesn't go too fast anyway.

I did this too at about the same age. He’s now 4 and can control it on full power (most of the time). The only struggle is reversing as his fingers are not quite long/strong enough to extend the trigger yet.

Since then, I also got him a Traxxas TRX4m crawler which has taught him a lot more about control. It’s great in woods as a sort of trail truck, or indoors. Duplo can make a good crawler course.

So in the end I got him a Nikko Dino Truck. About 40£ and about right for him just turning 3. Suspension, squidgy tyres and rechargeable via usb. Not so fast but not slow and he seems to be enjoying it. Will see how long it lasts and how long his interest lasts!
