Hobao Hyper ST Truggy
Discussion
Just made a cheeky offer on this on eBay and won it, it was delivered today.
Came from a model shop that took it as a customer return saying it had only been run a few times.
It looks like it might have been driven once then put back in the box.
Will give it a test run later, but I’m betting it was never run in properly!

Nice! I’ve got one of those too as well as my Kyosho Inferno.
We used to have lots of fun with them over the fields local to us.
We even upgraded our HoBao Hyper 7’s to have the two speed gear centre diff setup which made them seriously quick.
It’s interesting to see how much seems to be similar on this model to my Hyper 7 which must be getting on for 20 years old now too!

The other thing that has to go is the cheap and nasty Hobao radio.
We always used to replace them with stick radios in the past, as that’s what I prefer, but sadly it seems stick radios for surface models are a thing of the past and steering wheel radios are all you can get now.
Thankfully I do have my Flysky noble wheel radio with spare receivers so that will be going in later today I suspect.

As mentioned above I could not get the engine to run for more than a few seconds.
I did reset the fuel flow needle screws to the standard settings first, the high speed screw was out by two turns, as in it was only a half a turn from fully closed, instead of being 2 and a half turns out.
However with a quick prime in the carb it would only run for a few seconds then die.
After a while I realised that fuel was not flowing around the main feed from the tank.
In the end I took the feed from the tank and attached it straight to the engine fuel inlet, which fixed the problem straight away.
It seems the issue is with the fuel filter, it’s like it’s restricting the flow of fuel somehow, but the gauze is not blocked.
Needs further investigation.
Also when taking the engine air filter off I noticed it had a blue Venturi restrictor in the carb, not sure if that’s standard?
It seems like a standard part?

Fixed the problem with the wife’s Audi Q2, well sort of but it’s a glorious day so decided to have another tinker with the Truggy.
First of all that crappy Hobao radio had to go, so out came my trusty Flysky Noble and one of the spare receivers.
The Flysky receiver is even smaller than the Hobao one, so it was dwarfed in the radio box.
I decided to put some foam sheet in there instead of sticking it in with double sided pads.

It’s also still quite tight as an engine too.
I’ve now put 4 tanks of fuel through the engine, but it’s still very tight to turn over.
So as with a lot of new glow engines I slacken off the plug by a quarter turn when starting and it makes the starting so much easier.
A few good blasts around the garden this afternoon and it’s running as sweet as it can be, it just needs to be leaned out to get the engine running in its sweet zone , but it is really nice and stable now, so happy with that!

Keep a weather eye open!
Of course I never did get around to making a video, and this truggy was one of several damaged by our garage fire back in August 2023.Keep a weather eye open!
Need to see if I can revive it, but it has gone rusty like all the other cars that got hot and were then sprayed with cold water by the fire brigade.
