Radio controlled cars
Discussion
Hi,
Not sure if this is the right section so please move if needed mods.
My 11 year old son has suggested a radio controlled car for Christmas.
We are new into this (doubtless the 9 year old will want one too!) and so much choice out there - I’m sure it was just the Grasshopper in my day!
Budget up to £150 and I guess off road predominately in parks etc.
Assuming 4x4 is useful, not certain on brushed vs brushless motors or types of handset etc.
Any help appreciated.
Thank you.

Does he like building things?
When I was that age, part of the fun was building the car. It also meant that when it broke, I knew how to fix it.
I think the FTX ones are pre-built?
I'd be going Tamiya on this basis (and also on nostalgia ). Neither of my boys are that interested at the moment though.

At that price point I would be looking at something from FTX.
I would say that the FTX Carnage would be a good place to start, there is quite a big difference in speed between the brushed and brushless and there looks to be about an £90 difference between the two. Personally I would start with the brushed version if this is his first RC car and then look to get a brushless combo, something like a a Hobbywing Max 10 for £90 once you feel the need for more speed.
At least that way your son can get used to the speed and then when you upgrade you end up with a better motor & ESC.
The FTX Tracer normally gets a mention for kids, it was good for my 4 year old as a starter as they are very tough. My son is now 5 & he's had a brushed Carnage for a year and recently moved onto a brushed Arrma Granite. I guess my point is that at 11, he might find that he grow's out of it too quickly. But then there is a new brushless version, not sure how good that is.

Good point to raise. If anything, building for me was more than half the fun. Then after a while, taking apart and modifying re-painting. And you can do that any time of day or night in any weather. When I was that age, part of the fun was building the car. It also meant that when it broke, I knew how to fix it.
