Evening all,

It's my son's 10th birthday next month and was thinking of getting him a semi decent remote control car. He has an old RC monster truck he enjoys playing with (was around £30), but it doesn't really work on grass and you lose control from the remote when over a 2.5 to 3 metres range.

Would £100 get him something semi decent? As mentioned above, primary use will just be in the garden (bit of a slope), something capable of handling small man made jumps etc. Any suggestions on what to buy?

After watching a few YouTube clips, looks like a FTX Tracer is the thing to buy.....??

I’ve just bought a Tracer for my son. Go for the monster truck not the truggy and you’ll get better ground clearance. Hugely impressive for £60.

Yup, absolutely.

Self confessed fan boy of the Tracer here and I've banged on several times before about how good it is for the cash... and in the past few weeks since I last proclaimed their brilliance, my little boys one has done about another 25,000 miles, most of them in the air and with it now approaching 2 years old I've now decided it simply cannot be killed even by a determined 4 year old. In fact last time it was out at the local skate park, it was just getting silly... full speed (and it's quick!) launches up a half pipe and it just bounces and keeps going.

Brilliant little thing!

For a ten year old it may be worth looking at upgrades - larger battery, oil shocks, brushless motor. I seem to remember a review where there was a higher spec model including these, buts they’re great starter cars either way.

Another vote for the tracer.

Great as standard, but really good with the bigger battery and oil filled shocks.

For the money I'm not sure it can be beaten.

Another vote here for the FTX Tracer. I bought one recently for my son and am incredibly impressed. It's fast (although has a speed dial on the remote so you can turn it down initially), the battery life is pretty good, plus it appears almost indestructible. If you do manage to break anything, there are spares available too. As others have said, there are upgrades available too.

I paid around £65 which seems really good value given how good it is.

Thanks everyone, I ordered one this afternoon smile

Out of interest, how long does the battery last? 20 minutes?

You’ll be very happy I’m sure.

I haven’t got a clue about precise battery life but it gives a decent run time and only takes a couple of hours to recharge via the USB charger.

You’ll want one for yourself!

Yup, that's ball park but obviously there's a few variables and you could always buy a second battery pack - which I always said I'd do but haven't as my little boy is usually happy to down tools after 5mins and head off to do other stuff leaving me to finish off the battery. Despite many many charge cycles in the past couple of years, his hasn't noticeably dropped in run time.
