1/43 Diecast Collectors - Who else is here?
Discussion
Hello!
I've been collecting 1/43 scale diecast models for years now - mainly because you can get decently detailed models for decent money & you can fit more on a shelf
I'm thinking of thinning my collection out a bit (lots of Corgi Vanguards etc...) and building a collection of slightly nicer models. I've seen quite a few by Norev that I really like the look of - does anyone have experience with Norev models? Are they decent?
I've also got a couple of IXO models which are really nice, so I'll probably look for a few more of those!

I’m slowly growing my collection of Minichamps ones. I’m really fussy about the details and proportions and they seem to have nailed it on most of their castings, whereas there’s a lot of other brands where they’re not quite right.
I’m getting there slowly but only started collecting maybe 18 months ago and they’re not cheap so it’s one or two a month for me.

Norev is good, have a lot of those, but also Spark and Hi-Tech or NEO and or Ixo indeed, many good ones from those, and ow KESS who made lovely Fiat 130 TC Abarth from which I've owned 3 long time ago, a red a black and a grey one, they are hard to get and expensive, but after a few years lurking I got them all and a week ago i got also the most rare one of those, only 42 made in white, I never owned a white one, so I bought it for in my other collection :-) not getting such change any time soon, great small details in real time, specially for 1/43 scale.
in fact, the last car I bought was a nice orange Fiat 131 2000TC Racing from NEO, nice details. here a web example, in real even more nice.

You should be taken by a car, then check out the best possible variant of it, then go for it.
The main brands (IXO, Schuco, some minichamps, Norev and then some) have sometimes much more diversity in their range than some high-end makers.
It sometimes depends on the contracts (Ferrari was tied to hot wheels for some time, with some great models), but in general it seems that there are only a few real dogs out there.
Get the car you want, not the maker!
BTW, René, a superb Fiat 130, that!
Have to look that up right now!

I have a neat collection of 1:43 Aston martins.
I now want to collect 1:43 of every car I have owned.. and in the right colour (or I respray them)
Its nio easy and I'm not sure its even possible. But its fun!
my idea, I started long time ago, then I stopped (luckily) and started also long time ago again when they made more special better looking cars.I now want to collect 1:43 of every car I have owned.. and in the right colour (or I respray them)

I have a showcase with 'maybe I want such car for real, and or they just look so cool in small.
And a showcase (new in alu) for all my ex owned cars, 122 at least... and yes in the right color and type...
so, say I have a red Ford Taunus 4 door, but I need such in 2 door, but rare in red and expensive, but bought already to get a look alike, and in time to be replaced for the correct one.
here that alu showcase.
What I'm proud off that I found, 4x a BMW e36 Compact in the right color, even the wheels come close.
those were all but one cars to overbridge and looking for the next sport car, the blue one was one I choose, it had a M3 e36 engine and more swap.
Still need about 30 changed, some a bit color, some the right car, like I still need 3 grey Nissan Pulsar GTI-R I already got the 2 black and red, but the grey does come rarely online (I had all in Sunny GTI-R those were even rarer LHD versions) and I owned 3 over time in grey... and I know they are there, so maybe have to wait, but thats also part of the hobby, like fishing, you never know when you get one, let alone 3 :-)
No pictures, sorry - the collection is currently out of reach.
I work in motorsport and have tried to collect one of every car I've been involved in, most have been easy enough with a couple of exceptions. With recent projects I've jumped on the 1/18th as well but they take up space pretty rapidly!
Then, when younger, I was a Ford RS fan boy so have managed to find one of just about everything I've had, plus a couple of others just because I like them. Then there's a couple of other bits and pieces. It's a slippery slope...

I've done the model of every car owned, or as close as I can get, there are some gaps and compromises that have had to be made.
Some gaps, BMW E46 coupe, F20 5 door (there are some very expensive models), Discovery D2 (I do have a 1:18 model though), Subaru Forester.
I also collect the F1 champion and Le Mans winner of the decades of my birth, which illustrates the development in the cars. I did try for the Touring Car winners as well but there are a lot of gaps.

lol, I tried a 1/18 collection also... but the showcase was soon overfull... so sold all 1/18 models I've had, ok one has to be sold still, and used also that money for the even better looking 1/43 scale of today (some brands) then the 1/18 cars, but some are very hard to find in a good looking model, or only made in japan if you want the good stuff and if someone is willing to sell, sometimes crazy prices... but if you wait and get lucky, you can get the same for 1/3 of those crazy prices at some time point and act fast :-) but still, my personal ex cars which are at least 122 cars incl that special new alu show case, is at least about 9.000 euro's worth and then I could get a lot a it cheaper then the 'normal' asking price of some models.I work in motorsport and have tried to collect one of every car I've been involved in, most have been easy enough with a couple of exceptions. Never thought it could be that expensive for such small cars :-) ok its also because I needed a lot of those since owning so many cars over the years (maybe forgot 3 to 5 cars max), but still.
And I had some money left to spent for it, otherwise it would not be so wise to put so much money in such.
But I love it, everyday I take a look and have many 'look outs' on some sites if 1 pops up for sale which I look out for, say a better color or that 2dr instead of the 4dr so you keep a bit busy and some day (already did a few) paint some that I can not find in some color, but I rather like it original and I have time (I hope)
I have several hundred 1/43 models, mostly F1 - I've been selling loads for a year or two as I'm trying to slim the collection down, but it's an uphill struggle when I'm still buying every one I can get my hands on!
Spark are among my favourites but are a bit pricey so I have fewer of those. I've been told they are built versions of the old Tenariv kits and from what I've seen, that's quite plausible.
Another good source of models is those magazine partworks and it's not just F1s. Some of them are based on the more well-known ones such as IXO and Norev. I've even got a couple that look like they could be Vanguards such as a racing Imp with the correct flared wheel arches (which the original Vanguards didn't have.)

Morning all, looks like my thread has arrived (having been directed here from the Frivolous Purchases thread)
Having historically collected odds and sods in 1:18 with no real theme, I recently started out in 1:43 for my first "themed collection" due to availability (and cost and space!)
I decided to commemorate my favorite era of my favorite race series by gathering the BTCC champions of 1990-2000. Having started out with the easily available Atlas models, I swiftly gathered the Sierra, E30, Cavalier, S40 and Mondeo.
I'm now deep into the grind of the long unavailable ones! The Minichamps 93 E36 was a lucky ebay find all the way from Australia, and the Ixo 97 Laguna popped up in a Facebook group (though I had to buy it as a job lot with a 95 Laguna which I didn't particularly want).
I'm most pleased however with the 94 Alfa Romeo. I'd been weighing up a Minichamps vs Atlas, both of them had their flaws which annoyed me and both were expensive. Then I stumbled across the fact that HPI had also modelled the car, as as you'd expect from the Japanese make, their model is absolutely stunning. I particularly like the fact that this version has the "illegal" rear wing and front splitter the car ran with in the first half of the season, rather than the retracted versions modelled on other versions. After a stint of ebay watching I finally managed to bag one for not much more than a Minichamps.
Currently I'm chasing the last of the "off the shelf" models, which is the 99 Nissan by Ixo. Unfortunately it is currently seeming very elusive - plenty of Leslie cars for sale but no Aiello ones.
Once I've bagged one of those, I'm into the murky world of conversions for my last 2 - the 92 E36 and the 96 Audi. I've seen plenty of attempts at both, done to varying degrees of quality. I know what base cars need to be used, I just need to find someone whose work I'm happy with to do it now (and save up for the expense!)

A few years ago, there was a model shop in Holborn called Modelzone (now closed unfortunately) I went in there one lunchtime, to find that they were selling off a variety of 1/43 cars at around £3 to £4 each, so it would have been rude not to buy half a dozen. They are all F1 cars by a company called Quartzo.

It was a great shop, originally a Beatties. Dammit - missed the closing down sale!andyA700 said:

Modelzone went round buying up all the good independent model stores in a massive splurge, to monopolise the market, my local victim was on the Rows in Chester. Then of course they got greedy and went bankrupt, which left us with no model stores at all.
Luckily the one in Chester was bought out by staff and reincarnated as an indy shop

My collection criteria is same as GenX's, I only collect cars I've helped design
Started off collecting the 1/18 scale cars given out by the teams I've worked for but the down scaled to 1/43 due to there being more choice and taking up less space
They're not on display yet but I've set aside a wall in my to be finished garage for 2m wide by 1m tall display case
Made the expensive error of collecting all the different drivers and liveries so have over a 120 models. Got in too deep to stop now or buy just 1 car for each newly launched car so it has been and can get spendy some years ie 6x F1 cars
Don't have the full set yet as a couple will need to be scratch built and I've not finished working on the design of new cars so not sure when my collection will be complete

Top tip for not buying more, find a job that doesn't involve cars.
My collecting has become more of an addiction as I'm only interested on working on car projects that I know a 1/43 scale car will go on sale after the real car has been launched
I've got a LM24 winner too and have a full set for F1
Have a car and/or driver for every position from 1st to last in both drivers and constructors F1 championships
If I did a collection of cars I've owned it would make for a very sad display
Sadly I don't think my collection will ever be complete as I need a few scratch built eg Indy Lights, Land Speed record, F3, Indy, F1 prototype
