Hi all,

I would like to get my son (6 years old) a ride on car, ideally a jeep or landrover.

There seems to be a massive gulf between cheap and nasty things for a few hundred quid and toylander's.

I don't mind spending up to about £1k and secondhand is fine.

Can anyone recommend any that are worth looking at?

Thanks!

Lots of budget creep, but you may be able to find one secondhand. https://www.toylander.com/

I built a Toylander (did a build thread here). Even as a DIY build, with only a very minimal number of parts being sourced from Toylander, the build cost was around a grand, plus a year in the garage, so they are expensive for a reason.

My lad does have a plastic Defender at his grandparents house, and although it's a really nice looking thing in it's own right, there is a huge difference in robustness, range and performance (we spent last Sunday at a steam fair, driving the Toylander round all day, with me on board too for a chunk of it). The "toy" ones just won't do that.

£1k is an awkward budget, not enough for a Toylander unless you build it, but way over budget for a toy ride on. What about budget creep and selling it on at the end?

Tend to agree with the above.

That said, my parents bought my eldest this - https://outlet.e-bikesdirect.co.uk/ride-on-toys/ca... - when he was 2...he's now 10, his brother used it for a good while too. and the thing won't die despite a lot of abuse (I did replace the battery with a bigger one after about 5yrs).

My youngest was bought a ride on motorbike...similar money. Utter ste. Didn't work out of the box, so the shop sent another (without asking for the old one) and that lasted about a year. I started to strip one of them and the motor doesn't seem that much bigger than the one in a Tamiya RC car smile

When the boys get a bit older we'll strip them together and try and make something from the motor/battery/gearboxes.

TL:DR...I'd either break your budget or buy a cheapo and cross your fingers smile (Or buy a decent pedal car?).

1k isnt a great price point for cars, bit you could get a very capable electric quad for under half that, i have them for both my girls and they are brilliant, they can be restricted to 3 different apeeds and have decent tyres brakes and suspension, easily as good as an 80cc petrol one, the 48v one can go 20+ with me on it but can be restricyed to under 5 mph. Mine are lead acid batteries but you can get lighter more powerful lithium powered ones for under budget too.

I am just about to change the motor, controller and battery in the 10 year olds one from lead acid 1000w brushed motor to a lithium ebike battery and a 1800w brushless motor and controller because she is ready for a bit more now but the frame and running gear are still fine for her size.

This is my youngest on her 800w one when she was 3. This is after she had it for around a month, and this is her first go at speed setting 2.
I'm out of breath from chasing her.

Possibly an old Freelander or a knackered rusty Disco. Have you seen Defender/Series prices of late?

What about a small garden tractor with the cutting deck removed.
