My father is in his 70s and retired and spends a fair bit of time making models. I usually buy Tamika or Revell but as I search for more interesting things like this but I’ve never seen them before and I have no idea what the quality is like, if anyone has experience of Fujima or can recommend another brand with interesting (similar to the 917 above) subjects, I’d be really grateful.

Hi Pablo

You haven't really given us much to go on. I'm guessing by the "as above" that your Dad is building a 917 at the moment, is it the red Revell "Le Mans 1970" kit? If so this is a rebox of the Fujimi kit and quite nice, albeit I believe some have issues with the body shape, especially at the rear.

If he likes 1/24 kits then Tamiya really is the "go to", then each other manufacturer seems to have its own strengths.

Fujimi is selectively good, some of their older kits are not very nice (such as the "Inch Up" series but some of the more modern ones are lovely.

Hasegawa are good, but it's rare they include engine detail.

Revell seem to be improving steadily.

Nunu/Beemax have some great touring and rally subjects.

Belkits do some other rally cars.

It's really about what subject you want and then take it from there, asking advice here will yield some good choices.

For on-line shopping, again, it depends what you're after - so ask away!

Tamiya and Fujimi are the brand names.

Have you looked at Ebbro? They do some nice historic F1 cars.

Sorry for confusing you! I think the (somewhat long winded) question i should have asked is “my father likes building models of racing cars, I buy him Tamiya and Revell 1/20 or 1/24 scale because the kits are good quality and build up well but the subjects aren’t quite what he wants and he’d prefer older stuff from the 60s/70s, are there any good kits out there that build as well as the Tamiya models?”

To which the answer appears to be, yes! I’ll investigate the brands listed. I just didn’t want to take a punt on something obscure I’d not heard of before and find the moulding was crap, poorly finished details and the plastic was hard and brittle etc.

I’ve preordered the Nunu ETCC BMW 320i as he’ll remember Andy Priaulx’s hillclimb beginnings!

For 60’s/70’s as an alternative to Tamiya then the Ebbro kits referred to above are definitely the way to go.
The have a wide range of Lotus 33, 49’s, 72’s and early Tyrrell’s.
From what little I know Ebbro was formed by ex-Tamiya guys and the two companies have a close relationship.
