On the whole, model paints are best when building models - after all, they are designed specifically for the job.
However, certain non-model paints can be be very useful, such as the plastic primer range from Halfords which many modellers (including me) use quite a lot.
As for tweezers, I have found craft/model tweezers much better than more general tweezers.
