Helicopter Helmet
Discussion
It took me literally minutes to decide to settle on that title.
Anyway, say I wanted to make a model helicopter that I could wear on my head like some sort of full face motorcycle helmet; how might I do it?
It would be purely for comic effect/attention seeking (I'm like that), would need no protective qualities (I wont be submitting it to BSI for certification) but should be reasonably robust.
I think the dream solution would be a spare body/cabin for a very large RC model but a quick look online shows that might not be possible. Any ideas?

How about a model of a Skycrane, with the hat as an underslung load? That would solve the problem of needing something with a wide enough fuselage for your head.
Now that's an idea. Trouble is it has to be big enough to be really visible to passers-by. I'll keep that as a possibility though.dundarach said:
That might work if I made my own big propeller to add to it. With a following wind I might even be able to take off. IJWS15 said:
Fine idea as long as you don't actually use it as a helmet.
Not deliberately. Just to add a bit more background, it's for a fund-raising event. Hence it needs to be obvious.
Rather than a whole helicopter, could you just make up some large blades (say out of balsa) on a hub (either simple dowel or a mock up of an Apache type affair with a sight on top to give interest)?
You could paint the rotors with bright bits on and maybe mock up some stickers to make the helmet itself look like a cockpit?
You could also knock up something simple to look like the tail and add a rotor to that (tube out of the middle of some wallpaper or similar) and stick it to the back of the helmet?

Thanks Murph. I think we are getting there. A hat rather than a helmet. As you say, as well as the propellers, it could still have the tail and colour scheme. Cheers. You could paint the rotors with bright bits on and maybe mock up some stickers to make the helmet itself look like a cockpit?

If you have a helmet, I think it would look better. You could use an kid's suction cup arrow for the rotor axle/hub. Or just loads of gaffer tape if the helmet isn't needed for actually protecting someone's head (Or maybe a hard hat would give more options).
