Losi Mini T - Other - Kids first RC Car
Discussion
Looking at getting my son his first “proper” RC car rather than the toy grade ones.
Really like the look of the Losi Mini T.
Anything else that should be up for consideration? The absima RTR also look OK but get bad reviews.
Also looking at the FTX offerings.
Anyone got any experience of these? Budget about 100-150.
Quite like the idea of a kit so if any of the Tam options would suit then suggestions welcome! RTR also fine!
Probably looking at Brushed for the moment as he is only 6 so don’t want anything too fast!
Cheers

I unboxed a losi mini b in my local shop the other day after my disastrous first foray into a Wltoys car, It is the same as a mini b with a slightly longer chassis.
It's a lovely bit of kit and goes great but I'm not sure I would've given it to my 6yr old son.
My boy (now 8) wanted to do jumps and crash or see how close to a crash he could get (much like his father)
The losi mini b and t feel a bit more lightweight racer and perform more like their bigger counterparts - my 6yr old would've broken something fairly quickly.
But all kids are different!!
My boy has acces to a few RC cars and the one that is the most versatile, robust and most used is his 1/24 crawler...
It is a carsima scale adventure mini crawler with a couple of mods mainly to stop it's crazy list (Google)
Ditch the supplied battery for a 300mah lipo it will go for forever.
Log piles on the living room floor, Lego ramps, tunnels you name it he does it with it.
It has a port for an FPV camera which we have added (£10 from China) and some cheapo goggles (35) which then leads to entirely different play.... Chasing the dog - trails under shrubs in the garden under the bed upstairs.
we took it away camping in the summer - all the kids can have a go etc etc
So worth looking at crawlers for a 6yr old and get something faster in a couple of years....
Or if it has to be a buggy now then the answer is tamiya tt02b

My daughter had an FTX Comet when she was 4 and then shortly afterwards got a brushed 1/10 Traxxas Slash. She's 6 now and still uses and has fun with both. The Traxxas was a lot more expensive but she doesn't know that and enjoys the FTX just as much (the FTX was £65 RTR).Really like the look of the Losi Mini T.

Both are solid cars. Admittedly she isn't the hardest "basher" in the world but they both get used at skateparks and she's broken nothing on either. I do worry slightly about the fragility of the FTX's electronics but so far it's been fine other than a loose battery wire which was a quick fix.
I was thinking that she was starting to lose interest in the hobby but a couple of weeks ago asked if we could do a Tamiya lunchbox build after Christmas.
Obviously I begrudgingly agreed..
FTX comet does look cool in the truck version! I would have totally dismissed the Losi if it not for the fact that they seem to be on offer at about 130 at the minute so bang in the range.
Just depends whether it is twice as good as the FTX comet, or an FTX bugstar might be more robust for the same buy in.
He is quite keen on it all. I resurrected some old stuff I had in the garage. Took the nitro Kyosho DBX out after I rebuilt it all and he promptly smacked it into a curb at full pelt when the throttle jammed open and bent the chassis
He really likes the Tamiya King Cab, but it’s old and fragile and probably needs to be sold to someone to restore it. So want something sort of similar and these truck style jobs look just the ticket!
I don’t have an aversion to Chinese tut, it’s all made in China but I can’t seem to get excited by anything off banggood or WLtoys. There is a dealer in Stevenage who are good, and they stock the FTX stuff (and Losi).
Thinking between those is that when it breaks, it just needs a decent replacement parts supply locally that you can pop in for rather than waiting 6 weeks from China!

We had an FTX Carnage for a while (very similar to the Bugstar) and had nothing but problems with it. Very brittle plastics although it was the brushless one and was fairly quick. It didn't stay in our garage long before it was moved on. Just depends whether it is twice as good as the FTX comet, or an FTX bugstar might be more robust for the same buy in.

I starting RC again a year or so ago with a Brushless FTX Outlaw. It was a lot of fun - especially with the dog chasing it, but with that speed came the inevitable crashes. Whilst bits are easily available, it became a bit of a chore replacing steering hubs etc constantly. I made the mistake of upgrading to metal parts here and there but this just moved the break somewhere else.
The OH got an Arrma Senton which was pretty strong for bashing, so I got a Granite. These are much stronger out the box than the FTX cars. But then we get to the next problem - the stronger you go, the faster you can go and the bigger the crash. To the extent that I've now made from parts an Arrma hybrid 6S Kraton / Senton / Granite which goes like stink. But it's got to have room to go at it's best.
The good thing about the Arrma controllers (and others) is the % throttle rate. So you can limit the speed to 25% for example to hopefully limit the damage. As the skills increase then so can the speed.
If I were getting a car for a youngster, I'd start with some kind of crawler as above to get the habit going (or not) and get them to gain control skills. Of they really do want a buggy speed machine for the money available then the Losi Mini T is a cut above in quality compared to the WLToys copies. I had a 124019 for a while and it was good fun but I took the precaution to order a shed load of spares when I ordered from China! I also have a Quanum Vandal that I've turned into a Rally car. If you don't mind chinese, it's an exact but much cheaper copy of an FTX Vantage so spares are easily available here.

The 1/12 FTX Comet is great value at £70 odd too and nowhere near as fast as the 1/10 brushless offerings. maybe get an optional basher bumper though!

Whilst Brushless can be faster than brushed, the main advantage when used with LiPo batteries is their much longer run times. A brushless crawler might be just the job!

Crawlers are quite cool. He has had a bash on his grandads TRX defender which he does like, but then that thing also flies about at a great speed when it wants to, and it’s an arm and a leg! Are there cheaper crawlers out there that can go fast and slow crawl stuff?
All the ones I see appear pretty slow and worry he will get bored!

The FTX Mauler looks kinda cool and not that expensive compared to that Land Rover!

Narrowed the search down. Has to be “blue and a monster truck” crawlers out.
FTX Carnage from time tunnel models delete standard charger and battery. Couple of 3300 batteries and a fast charger.
Losi Mini T 2.0
Maverick Quantum MT
Between those three what would be the best choice?
Cheers
