Hi all, I thought I'd challenge myself and make a little steam engine. Just a single piston going to a flywheel. Does anyone have any advice or plans? I'll be mostly trying to do my own design, but it doesn't hurt to do a bit of research!

Have a look at dr_gn’s Stuart steam engine threads. Can get sets of bare castings to machine up with plans to make all the crank, valve chest etc.

Something like a Stuart 10v sounds like what you want?

Check out Myfordboy. He has an amazing series of Youtube videos and sells kits.

This might be useful for you? From memory it starts off with Mamod-esque plans and gets a little more complex.

There are two volumes I think, someone gave me these years ago:

There’s some good information in them, and plans, but to me it seemed a lot of effort to end up with something that looks…not crude, but too simple and featureless to justify the work in making them. You still need a lathe, and a lot of hand sawing and finishing.

Each to their own of course, but the extra cost and complexity of the 10V was well worth it for me.
