Airfield Diorama

Some advice please.

Want to build a Cold War airfield diorama, whats the best material to use MDF?

Also any advice on painting a runway or should I just use the Coastal Kits runway and add to it?

What I've done in the past was skim a piece of MDF with a thin layer of plaster or filler, then drag a wide, stiff brush across to give it some texture, then when it's dry scribe expansion joints in a grid every few inches. Once painted various shades of grey it's pretty convincing.

Have a look at Luke Towan's youtube channel for scenic ideas, he mainly does model railway stuff but lots of the stuff transfers to any subject matter.

Amera Plastics do some kits of blast pens, Hardened Aircraft Shelters etc. that might be useful?

What scale are you modelling? How big will the base need to be?

Coastal Kits and similar provide a good short cut and can be integrated into otherwise home made dioramas.

Probably better off making your own base. You would have to join together a few Coastal Kits type concrete hard pans to cover three V bombers plus the other stuff.

If you're using the Airfix Bloodhound, make sure you get the oldest kit you can find. I've got a later version (in green plastic) and it's pretty much only fit for the bin - the moulds must have been knackered by that time.
