Power to old 00 model railway - modern power pack tripping?
Discussion
I've recently unpacked my old model railway for my son, who's showing keen interest in it. It's a mix of 1980s-90s mainly Hornby and Dapol engines and rolling stock, with Hornby track - though the old power unit has gone missing.
I bought a new Hornby R7729 power unit, hoping this would work with the old engines and track. To my delight, at least one of the engines appears to be working... but for about a whole 5 seconds before the new power unit appears to trip out.
What do I need to do to get power reliably? There appear to be no other issues with the track or other short circuit possibilities. Is the problem the new power pack?
Thanks

The little Hornby controller only has a 0.5A current max output and some of the older locos can draw more than this. Make sure all the wheels are clean with no dirt or oxidizing that will increase resistance and make sure the track is clean. Might be worth popping the body off and checking there is no dust or gummed up old oil in the mechanisms too but be careful to not break anything.
If that doesn't work then you might have to look at something like a Morley Vector or Gaugemaster controller that can handle a bit more current.
